This is the time of the year when diversity is the spice of life betting on sports. The college basketball season finally comes to a close with the National Championship Game, while both the NBA and the NHL continue to push towards the start of an extended postseason run. The new shooter on the board is MLB regular-season games, and savvy bettors will be looking to jump all over the sportsbooks in early action on the baseball diamond.
The very talented team of expert handicappers at Doc's Sports thrive this time of the year with the use of Doc's Unit Betting System in conjunction with some of their top big-unit plays, while the following insider betting tips can contribute to a bettor's bankroll by helping you win cash this week.
Betting on NCAA Championship Trends
Monday night's NCAA Men's Basketball Championship features a very intriguing matchup between the Big East's Villanova Wildcats and the ACC's North Carolina Tar Heels. Both teams proved to be the best in their respective conference in the regular season, and they have more than proven their betting value in a tremendous five-game run through this year's NCAA Tournament to land a spot in this national title game.
The Wildcats were the No. 2 seed in the South and went a perfect 5-0 against the spread over the past few weeks, including a stunning 64-59 upset against Kansas in the Elite 8 as two-point underdogs. Closing as 2.5-point favorites against Oklahoma at BetOnline in Saturday's Final Four Round, Villanova crushed the Sooners 95-51 in one of the most impressive shooting performances in recent tournament memory.
The Tar Heels failed to cover as heavy 22.5-point favorites in their opening-round 83-67 victory against Florida Gulf Coast as the No. 1 seed in the East, but they have gone a perfect 4-0 ATS ever since. This profitable run includes a dominant 83-66 victory against conference rival Syracuse as 10-point favorites this past Saturday night.
According to Odds Shark, a No. 2 seed and a No. 1 seed have met in the Finals three times since 1996, and the top seed has prevailed all three times both SU and ATS. The margin of victory in those three games was 11.7 points, which adds some solid value to North Carolina as a slight2.5-point favorite on BetOnline's current betting board. The betting line for the total in this game has been set at 149.5, and it has gone "over" in five of the last six NCAA Tournament Championship Games.
The Thunder is Rumbling Towards the Postseason
The Golden State Warriors' run to a new NBA single-season record for SU wins has dominated the news all year long as the hottest team in the league on the court, but what bettors want to know is which teams are heating things up at the betting window. Following the Warriors and San Antonio in the Western Conference standings is the Oklahoma City Thunder, and they are making everyone stand up and take notice of their impressive run down the stretch of the regular season.
The Thunder are 53-24 SU as of Sunday's games and pretty much locked in as the third seed in the West following a SU 8-2 run in their last 10 games. It has been a bit of a roller-coaster ride for bettors with a 7-5 record ATS in their last 12 games, but moving forward they could position themselves as a team to go with when the postseason actually gets underway. Oklahoma City is easily the biggest threat to derail a preordained rematch between Golden State and San Antonio in the Western Conference Finals, and there could be some great value in their betting odds as the NBA Playoffs advance to the later rounds.
As far as the present, the Thunder will be back in action on Tuesday night in a road game against Northwest Division rival Denver after getting rocked by Houston 118-110 on Sunday as three-point road favorites. While BetOnline still has this game "off the board," keep in mind that Oklahoma City is 5-2-1 ATS in their last eight games following a SU loss and it improves to 6-1 ATS in its last seven games after allowing 100 points or more in its previous outing. It also helps that the Thunder are 5-2-1 ATS in their last eight games against the Nuggets.
MLB Movers and Shakers on the Futures Betting Line
Betting on any kind of futures odds is much more of an emotional bet than one steeped in pure logic. Actual money wagered moves the futures odds in one direction or the other with the collective emotion of the betting public acting as the driving force.
A few of teams with upward mobility in their futures odds at Bovada to win this year's World Series have been the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Back in November, the Cubs betting odds to win it all opened at +1000, and heading into the new season they are now +500.
The Giants opened at +1600 betting odds, and the betting public has driven this number down to +800. The Diamondbacks have also caught the attention of bettors over the offseason with a significant move from +5000 to +2500. While Arizona is still a ways down the list at its current odds, Chicago is now the clear favorite to win it all, followed by San Francisco.
You might want to go with the added value in the Giants' odds, especially if you still think the Cubs are still cursed. Heading into the 2016 MLB season, San Francisco has won a world title every other year (2014, 2012 and 2010) over the previous six seasons.
