Unexpected upsets are a big part of any NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, but having the right insight to pick them is a very difficult task. Any time you bet money on the outcome of a sporting event there is a certain level of risk that you will be wrong. One of the best ways to try and improve your chances of cashing in on a wager is going into a matchup with an inside edge that tips the scales in your favor against the sportsbooks.
The expert handicappers at Doc's Sports are proven winners, and they make their living off of finding that inside edge and then using it with Doc's Unit Betting System to release their top-unit plays. The following are a few insider betting tips that might help win you some cash in a few upcoming sporting events.
The Best of the Sweet 16 Against the Spread
The 68-team field for this year's NCAA Tournament has quickly been reduced to just 16 schools in what has been some of the wildest college hoops action in recent memory when it comes to this huge betting event. Even though this is a one-and-done tournament where a straight up loss sends you packing, it is worth a closer look at some of the top teams left in the field when it comes to their betting trends against the spread.
In a rare twist of fate, the top overall seed Kansas just so happens to have the best overall record ATS. The Jayhawks will go into this Thursday's Sweet 16 Round matchup against Maryland as 6.5-point favorites on BetOnline's NCAAB betting board. Their overall record ATS this season is 23-11, and they have now covered in four of their last five games following Saturday's 73-61 victory against Connecticut as 7.5-point favorites.
Maryland failed to cover as a nine-point favorite in its 79-74 opening-round victory against South Dakota State, but the Terrapins did cover as 7.5-point favorites in Sunday's 73-60 win against Hawaii. Kansas comes into Thursday's game with an 8-1 mark ATS in its last nine neutral-site games, while Maryland has now failed to cover in four of its last five NCAA Tournament games.
Spurs' Defense Helps Bettors on the Total Line
The big story in the NBA all season long has been the Golden State Warriors' quest to set a new single-season record for SU wins. They will need to win 11 of their final 13 regular-season games, but the one fly in the ointment could be the San Antonio Spurs.
The Spurs were crushed by the Warriors on Jan. 25 in a 120-90 loss as 4.5-point road underdogs, but they evened the score this past Saturday night on their home court with an impressive 87-79 victory over Golden State as 4.5-point favorites at home. The total stayed "under" in both of these contests, and on the year the total has stayed under or ended as a "push" in 39 of San Antonio's first 69 games. The NBA's top two teams will meet two more times in the regular season starting with an April 7 clash in Golden State followed by a return trip to San Antonio on April 10.
More recently, the total has stayed under in 10 of the Spurs last 13 games heading into Monday night's matchup on the road against Charlotte. The total line has closed higher than 200 points 11 of those previous 13 games. However, it has been set at 198.5 points for the game against the Hornets. Everyone knows what players such as Kawhi Leonard (20.9 points), LaMarcus Aldridge (17.9 points) and Tony Parker (12.1 points) bring to the table on a team that is ranked seventh in the NBA in scoring with 104.6 points per game and one of the better bets ATS at 41-28 on the year. To me, it is all the intangibles that go into a defense that is ranked first in points allowed (92.3) that adds the real value to the "under" bet for this team.
Penguins Getting Hot at the Right Time of the Year
Pittsburgh Penguins' fans have been tortured souls in recent years with just one trip to the conference finals on their resume since last hoisting the Stanley Cup in 2008 as clearly one of the most talented teams in the NHL.
This season, the Penguins have been pretty much an afterthought in the Metro Division with the Washington Capitals running away with the regular-season title. The NHL is the type of league where nothing that happens in the regular season really matters if you can get hot heading into the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and that is clearly the case with this team.
Pittsburgh's current winning streak moved to six games after it waxed the Capitals 6-2 on Sunday as a slight +102 home underdog. Going back over this recent run, the Penguins have now posted key wins over their closest competitors in the Metro, including a 5-3 victory against the New York Rangers on March 13 as slight -101 road favorites.
They have outscored the competition 24-11 over the six games led by one of the league's greatest players. Sidney Crosby has been on fire lately with three goals and seven assists in his last six starts, which is a great sign heading into the postseason. At the other end of the ice, Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury has been in net for five of the six wins and his goals-against average now stands at 2.29 over 54 previous appearances between the pipes this season.
The Penguins will be back in action this Thursday at home against New Jersey before going on the road to face Detroit and New York this upcoming weekend.
