The end of March is a very popular time of the year when it comes to betting on sports. The college basketball season draws to a close with the NCAA Tournament's Final Four matchups while both the NBA and the NHL continue to gear up for their second seasons with the start of the playoffs next month. MLB also returns to the diamond with Opening Day, so there is definitely enough action to go around when it comes to finding something to bet on.
The expert handicappers at Doc's Sports earn their keep during times like this by finding an inside edge for a particular matchup or event and then using it in conjunction with Doc's Unit Betting System to release some top-unit plays. The following are this week's insider betting tips that might help win you some cash in a few of these upcoming sporting events.
Betting the Odds for the Final Four
With three No. 1 seeds out of the picture in this year's NCAA Tournament, it appears that the door is wide open for a wild Final Four this weekend in Houston. I took the bait last week during the Sweet 16 Round that at least two top seeds would make it into the tournament's semifinals, so it is time to go back to the drawing board to try and find the best value in the odds to win for the four remaining teams.
Bovada has listed the North Carolina Tar Heels as the top favorite to win the national title at +105. However, given the fate of the other No. 1 seeds I would not call this a sure bet. The good news is that they will have to face fellow ACC foe Syracuse this Saturday as solid nine-point favorites to get into next Monday's NCAA Championship.
North Carolina beat the Orange twice during the regular season. And as good as Syracuse has been as a No. 10 seed out of the Midwest Region in this tournament, I feel comfortable in passing on its +900 odds to extend this amazing run all the way to a national title.
The other side of the picture has Villanova listed at +260 betting odds to win it all, with Oklahoma's moneyline odds set at +350. These are two teams I had making an earlier exit in this tournament, and both have already exceeded my expectations. Of the two, I would have to lean towards the Wildcats as slight two-point favorites in the other Final Four showdown on Saturday night.
To me, it is all about value in the numbers. And given the way Villanova has played so far, I am taking the extra value in its +260 odds to cut down the nets next Monday in a thrilling upset against favored North Carolina.
NBA Bettors Getting Clipped in Los Angeles
You think that going chalk with the fourth-best team in the NBA's loaded Western Conference would be a solid play. However, when it comes to the Los Angeles Clippers' performance lately both on the court and at the betting window that has clearly not been the case.
Much was made of how well the Clippers handled the loss of their top scorer Blake Griffin when he was lost to a hand injury in late December. In his absence, the team was able to start the New Year with five straight up wins as part of an extended 10-game winning streak while going a highly-profitable 8-2 against the spread.
Flash forward to the month of March and things continue to trend downward with a SU record of 6-7 in their last 13 games while going a very costly 4-9 ATS. Los Angeles will close out the month as a 3.5-point home favorite against Boston on Monday night before road games against Milwaukee on Wednesday and Oklahoma City this Thursday night. All told, the Clippers have 10 games left in their regular-season schedule, and they have clearly established themselves as a team to go against down the stretch.
Looking for a Hungry NHL Team to Bet On
The road to the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs shaping up to be a wild ride for the Philadelphia Flyers in the Eastern Conference Metro Division. Following this past Saturday's 2-1 loss to Arizona as -129 road favorites, they are four points out of fourth place in the division and eighth in the conference standings heading into this week's action. Going back over their last 10 games, they remain a very solid 6-2-2, with seven of those games played on the road.
This week, the Flyers will host Winnipeg on Monday night as heavy -187 favorites before welcoming rival Washington to the Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday night. Later in the week, Philadelphia will play a third straight home game when it faces Ottawa on Saturday night. Needless to say, these are all must-win situations with just eight games left on Philly's regular-season schedule. However, from a betting standpoint this means finding the best time to pounce on what has to be a very hungry team looking to return to the postseason for the first time in three seasons.
The moneyline odds against Winnipeg are not all that favorable, but against the Capitals they should fall into line. This will be the fourth meeting between these two Metro Division foes, with first-place Washington holding a 2-1 edge. The Capitals have already locked up the No. 1 seed in the East with 111 points in 74 games. This will be their fourth game in six nights after a home game against Columbus on Monday night as heavy -231 favorites. With road games against Colorado on Friday and Arizona on Saturday up next for Washington, this could be a great spot to go big on the Flyers as clearly the Capitals' toughest battle during this four-game stretch.
