I have said, and I still believe, that Alabama was extraordinarily lucky to get two of their three previous National Championships. I still think the fact that they were placed in the 2011-12 BCS Championship Game is the biggest sham - in one of the most corrupt, nonsensical sports in this country - so far this century in college football. But there was absolutely nothing fluky about Alabama's title run last season.

In 2015 the Crimson Tide won nine games against teams that finished the season in the Top 25 or were ranked at the time they faced the Tide. That includes three straight wins over Florida, Michigan State and Clemson in the postseason. Alabama outscored opponents by 20 points per game and improved its record to 105-18 in Nick Saban's nine-year tenure.

Saban plays straightforward, no-nonsense football. The Crimson run the ball down opponents' throats and play hellacious defense, end of story. It's easy to stay consistent when the plan is that simple.

This team simply reloads season after season. You can do that when you sign the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation just about every year. So although Alabama has just 11 returning starters, that won't mean that there will be much of a drop-off to this year's team. They will remain a national title contender and are a threat to make the playoffs for the third straight season.

Alabama opens the season with a big game against USC in Arlington. They've dominated other marquee programs - Michigan, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Wisconsin - in neutral-site season openers each of the past four years, winning those games by an average of 20 points per game. Their other two toughest games, and only real tests, are both on the road at Tennessee and LSU.

I know Alabama has a new quarterback again and lost a slew of talented players to the NFL. But there's really no reason why they can't win 11 games again this year. They don't get upset at home, where they have lost only four times in eight years. And I can't see them losing to Tennessee and LSU. I do see them falling in one of those games. But in order to lose this bet they'd have to post three L's for the first time since 2007. Keep playing 'over'.
