Doc's Sports expert handicapper Raphael Esparza is still trying to get over his beloved Chicago Cubs getting swept in this year's NLCS. However, what is done is done, so in this week's discussion we will get his pick to win this year's World Series between the Kansas City Royals and the New York Mets.
The former Vegas Sports Informer retired in 2013 from a long and prosperous career in the Las Vegas sportsbook industry that culminated with his rise to the Director of the Race and Sports Book for MGM Grand's Aria. He now splits his time between Las Vegas and New Orleans, running one of the most diversified sports investment services in the country. The following is this week's Q&A with Raphael.
Doc's Sports: The favorites and the underdogs were just about evenly split this past week in the NFL, so which games moved the dial the most for the sportsbooks as well as the betting public?
RE: Overall, the books came out ahead last week, and after a slow start to the season, they are back on top of the betting public for the year. As far as this past Sunday's games, Atlanta failing to cover against Tennessee was a big win for the books and there was also quite a bit of money on Dallas, so that was another money maker in town. As far as the betting public, the biggest win on the day was actually Jacksonville's straight up victory against Buffalo. This one caught the books by surprise given the real early start in town.
Doc's Sports: The big game on this week's NFL slate is a battle of unbeatens on Sunday Night Football between the Green Bay Packers and the Denver Broncos. The Packers come in as slight favorites, but which team ends the night with its perfect record still intact?
RE: I am going to have to go with the Packers' offense out-dueling the Broncos' defense to get the win. I have been less than impressed with Peyton Manning's play so far, and it is doubtful he turns things around against a very good Green Bay defense.
Doc's Sports : No. 9 Notre Dame takes on the surprising No. 21 Temple Owls this Saturday night in one of the bigger matchups on the Week 9 college football slate. Can the Owls keep making their way up the national rankings with and upset of the Irish as almost 10-point underdogs at home?
RE: There is no doubt that Temple's defense is to key to keeping things close, but it has not had to face an offense as potent as Notre Dame's this season. I see the Irish moving the ball up and down the field almost at will to put at least 30 points on the board against the Owls. I also think there is some great value in the "over" on the total line even if it moves all the way to 51.
Doc's Sports : This Tuesday night in Kansas City, the 2015 best-of-seven World Series gets underway with the Royals taking on the upstart New York Mets. New York appears to be the slight favorite with most of the series price odds for this matchup, so would you agree with that summation?
RE: I am leaning the other way with the prediction of Kansas City in six games. The Royals will benefit from last year's experience in the World Series, and they will do whatever it takes to disrupt the Mets' pitching. Look for Kansas City to employ every possible small ball tactic in the book such as bunts, stealing bases, working the pitching count etc.
Doc's Sports: The fact that Triple Crown winner American Pharoah lost his last time out in this year's Haskell Stakes has to cast some shadow of doubt that he will win this Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic as the morning-line favorite. Are you betting that he goes out on top in North America's richest stakes race?
RE: I was actually hoping they would not run him in this race since I would hate to see such a great horse go out losing his final two races. I am not sure which of the other horses in the field would be able to beat American Pharoah, but all the value is in betting the field against him for Saturday's Classic.
