Weekly Q&A with Doc's Sports Expert Handicapper Raphael Esparza
by Doc's Sports - 3/17/2015
This season's NCAA Tournament gets underway this week, and Doc's Sports can put you right in the thick of all the action with affordable selection packages for the games. We have been the leader in the sports selection industry for more than four decades and are poised to continue that tradition by supplying winning picks for all the major sports. Over the years, Doc's has put together a team of expert handicappers that include the "best of the best" when it comes to offering something for everyone in their selection packages.
One of the shining stars on this team for well over eight years has been Raphael Esparza. He first made a name for himself as the Vegas Sports Informer during a long tenure with some of the biggest sportsbooks in Las Vegas. At the pinnacle of his career, he held the prestigious position of Director of the Race and Sports Book for MGM Grand's Aria until his retirement from the industry in 2013.
One of the main factors to Raphael's continued success as a top expert handicapper has been a direct connection to a vast network of Las Vegas "insiders" that include some of the town's biggest and most influential personalities in the sports betting game. These professionals know this industry inside and out, and he has used this information to create a true "insider's edge" for all of his selections. Savvy bettors that have been along for the ride have walked away with a small fortune over the years.
What makes Raphael's selection service so unique are picks for sports such as the WNBA, horse racing, boxing, professional tennis and soccer leagues all around the globe. One week it might be pro wrestling and the next it could be prop bet picks in the world of entertainment. It is safe to say that if a sportsbook posts odds for it, he will handicap it.
Awhile back, Doc's and Raphael decided to sit down for a weekly Q&A that would delve deeper into the Las Vegas betting scene as well as cover some of the hottest trending sports betting topics of the day. We have found that there is no better source than someone that is a true "insider" in the undisputed sports gambling capital of the world. The following is this week's conversation.
Doc's Sports: The Big Dance gets underway this week, so starting on the left side of the NCAA Tournament bracket, can you give us your top sleeper team in first the Midwest Region and then the West Region?
RE: I like Wichita State's chances to upend Kanas in the bottom half of the Midwest bracket, but my sleeper team would be Buffalo, which I believe is capable of beating both West Virginia and Maryland. In the West, I would have to go with BYU. The Cougars do have to get past a play-in game against Ole Miss, but I have them beating Xavier and they could give Baylor a run for its money if they stay hot shooting the ball.
Doc's Sports: Moving to the right side of the bracket with the East and the South, who would be your team to watch in each of these regions?
RE: My team to watch in the East is Michigan State. The Spartans are always a threat come tournament time, and I would not be surprised to see them take down Virginia this weekend. Turning to the South Region, my pick would be SMU. The overall experience and depth on this team could pose some major trouble for teams such as Iowa State and possibly Gonzaga a bit further down the road.
Doc's Sports : In a recent post on your blog, Straight Talk Bet, you posted some betting props from 5Dimes for ESPN Bracketology expert Joe Lunardi's predictions for this year's 68-team field for the NCAA Tournament. Looking back at your picks for a few of these props, how did you fare?
RE: My top prop bet pick was the 'under' 66 on the number of teams that Lunardi correctly picked. I know he did not have Indiana or UCLA in the final field and he did have Temple and Colorado State getting in.
Doc's Sports: Turning to the NBA, there is a huge showdown on the schedule this Wednesday night between Atlanta and Golden State. The Hawks won the first meeting this season between the league's top two teams as slight two-point underdogs at home, so which one of these powers come out on top this Wednesday night at Golden State?
RE: Golden State will be looking for revenge from that loss, and it should get the straight up win at home, but with Kyle Korver out for the Hawks and Thompson questionable for the Warriors, it is hard to say what this will do to the actual spread.
Doc's Sports: We already talked about the MLB American League when it came to your preseason picks to win each division, so moving on to the National League, which team do you have winning the East this season?
RE: Hands down this is Washington's race to lose. The Nationals' pitching staff is far and away the best of any team in the NL East and probably in the Majors as a whole. The one team that could be a surprise and compete for a Wild Card spot from this division is the Miami Marlins.
