Weekly Q&A with Doc's Sports Expert Handicapper Raphael Esparza
by Doc's Sports - 3/10/2015
The excitement of March continues with Championship Week along with the start of this season's NCAA Tournament next Tuesday, and Doc's Sports has you covered with affordable selection packages for all the action. We entered our 44 th year in the sports selection industry on a high note with another winning season in football, and the hits have just kept coming with a winning record for basketball as well. Doc's team of expert handicappers is made up of the "best of the best" that offers something for everyone in their selection packages.
One of our top expert handicappers for well over eight years has been Raphael Esparza. He became known as the Vegas Sports Informer during a long tenure with some of the biggest sportsbooks in Las Vegas, and at the pinnacle of his career he held the prestigious position of Director of the Race and Sports Book for MGM Grand's Aria until his retirement from the industry in 2013.
These days Raphael continues to crank out the winners for a wide selection of betting events. One of the main factors to his continued success has been direct access to a vast network of Las Vegas "insiders" that include some of the town's biggest and most influential personalities in the sports betting game. These professionals know this industry inside and out to help create a true "insider's edge" that is part of all his selections. The end result speaks for itself, and savvy bettors that have been along for the ride have made a small fortune over the years.
He does not stop at releasing picks for only the major sports. You will also find picks for the WNBA, horse racing, boxing, professional tennis and soccer leagues all around the globe. One week it might be pro wrestling and the next it could be prop bet picks in the world of entertainment. It is safe to say that if a sportsbook posts odds for it, he will handicap it.
Doc's and Raphael continue their weekly Q&A to delve deeper into the Las Vegas betting scene as well as to cover some of the hottest trending sports betting topics of the day. We have found that there is no better source than someone that is a true "insider" in the undisputed sports gambling capital of the world. The following is this week's conversation.
Doc's Sports: This time of the year there are a number of college basketball conferences that come to Las Vegas to stage their annual tournaments for Championship Week. The Pac-12 is clearly the biggest conference in town, but is this tournament also the biggest draw for bettors?
RE: The Pac-12 would still have the biggest draw at the betting windows given how the betting public tends to gravitate towards matchups with bigger-named schools, but this conference tournament also generates more action than the others because of its centralized location on the Las Vegas strip at the MGM Grand.
Doc's Sports: The Wisconsin Badgers were the top team in the Big Ten during the regular season, and sportsbooks have them favored to win this week's conference tournament. Do you have the Badgers claiming both titles, or is there another Big Ten team you like to pull off an upset?
RE: I would have to go with Wisconsin given its current form down the stretch. The Badgers are playing some of their best ball of the season, and they now have a legitimate offense to go along with a shutdown defense. The added incentive to winning this week is the possibility of still earning a No. 1 seed if Villanova, Duke or Virginia makes an early exit in their tournament.
Doc's Sports: NFL free agency is officially underway with quite a few marquee players testing the waters in search of more money with a new team. Can you give a couple of your top free agents that have the best chance to make a major impact in a different uniform next season?
RE: I think the whole NFL free agency period is way over-hyped with mainstream media, especially when it comes to skill players on offense. The true impact players that can make a difference generally play defense, and the name at the top of this year's list is clearly Ndamukong Suh. He has the ability to change the entire culture of Miami's defense with his nasty attitude and hard-nosed style of play.
Doc's Sports: We already talked about your MLB picks this season for the AL East and AL Central with Boston and Detroit getting the nod. Moving on the AL West, which team do you have winning the title in this division?
RE: The team that impressed me the most at the end of last season in the AL West was Seattle. While I would have to still stick with the Los Angeles Angels as my pick to win the division again this year, look for the Mariners to keep things interesting all season long.
Doc's Sports : In a recent podcast on your blog, Straight Talk Bet, you talked about the future of dodgeball as a possible Olympic sport with Stuart Contreras from the New Orleans Dodgeball Association. Speaking of the Olympics, how much action do you expect them to generate now that the Las Vegas sportsbooks can offer betting odds for the events?
RE: I do not think the overall handle in town will increase dramatically for the Olympics, but they will bring in money from some different sources that might not normally bet on sports when in town. Some of the events could be good fillers on slow days and a sport such as hockey has the potential to be a huge draw for some of the bigger matchups.
