by Doc's Sports - 1/6/2015
It's a new year, and Doc's Sports has you covered with a wide variety of selection packages for all the major sports to help you get off to a fast start in 2015. We are entering are 44th year in the sports selection industry, and one of the biggest reasons for our continued success in such a competitive environment is a team of top expert handicappers that have the ability to crank out winners on a regular basis.
One of the "best of the best" entering his ninth year with Doc's is Raphael Esparza, who became known as the Vegas Sports Informer during his days behind the counter in the Las Vegas sportsbook industry. At the pinnacle of his career he held the prestigious position of Director of the Race and Sports Book for MGM Grand's Aria until his retirement in 2013.
Nowadays, Raphael remains hard at work developing and expanding an already vast network of relationships with some of the biggest and most influential Las Vegas insiders in the sports betting industry today. These professionals know the gaming world inside and out, and Raphael has used this "insider's edge" in his selection packages to help savvy bettors make a small fortune over the past several years.
The unique aspect of his handicapping service is selection packages for not just the major sports but for other betting opportunities such as the WNBA, horse racing, boxing, professional tennis and soccer leagues all around the globe. Recently, he has gone as far as to release picks for professional wrestling, high school football and high-profile award shows in the field of entertainment. It's safe to say that if Las Vegas posts odds for it, he will handicap it.
Doc's and Raphael continue their ongoing weekly Q&A to delve deeper into the Las Vegas betting scene as well as to discuss some of the hottest trending sports betting topics of the day. We have found that there is no better source than someone that is a true "insider" in the undisputed sports gambling capital of the world. The following is this week's conversation.
Doc's Sports: The college football season is down to its final game, and ever since August you have been touting Oregon as your pick to win this year's national title. While we know you are going with the heavily-favored Ducks straight up in next Monday's championship game, but can they cover against the surprising Ohio State Buckeyes?
RE: The biggest surprise for me in this game is how the spread has already dropped to 6.5 points on early Ohio State money. It could actually go as low as six points by game time. The only reason I might go with a small money line bet on the Buckeyes is to hedge the futures money I already wagered on Oregon.
Doc's Sports: The action in the NFL Playoffs is starting to really heat up with this weekend's Divisional Round. You made the right call in Baltimore's SU upset over Pittsburgh last week, so are you sticking with the Ravens to knock off New England on the road this Saturday?
RE: There is no reason to believe that New England is a lock to win this game. Baltimore has already proven it can beat the Patriots in the postseason, and if Joe Flacco stays hot like he was last week against the Steelers then the Ravens can definitely pull off another upset this week. At the very least I would go with Baltimore and the points.
Doc's Sports: Over in the NFC, Dallas came into the playoffs as one of the hottest teams in the league, but it did not look all that convincing in a tight win against Detroit in the Wild-Card Round. Do the Cowboys still have the right stuff to pull off an upset in Green Bay on Sunday?
RE: The bigger question in this game is the health of Aaron Rodger's sore calf? That has the potential to have a huge impact on this game. As far as the Cowboys, their chances to stay alive in the playoffs could hinge on the play of their offensive line. This unit had its issues against the Lions, but if it can get its act together on Sunday, this could turn into a very interesting matchup.
Doc's Sports : In a recent post in you blog, Straight Bet Talk, you released your picks for this Sunday's Golden Globe Awards. Using Doc's Unit Betting System, can you give us your "play of the night" for this event?
RE: Having watched all of these movies as part of the handicapping process, I actually have three strong picks for Sunday night which could be considered high-unit plays.
Going chalk, I like Julianne Moore in "Still Alice" for "Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama" and Michael Keaton in "Birdman" as "Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy". I also like Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu at a bit longer odds in the "Best Director-Motion Picture" category for "Birdman".
Doc's Sports: We are still months away from the 2015 Triple Crown horse racing season, but as the prep races for this year's Kentucky Derby Trail start to get underway this month, can you give us one or two horses to keep an eye on as legitimate contenders?
RE: The one horse that really caught my eye as a two-year old is a Bob Baffert-trained horse named American Pharoah. This thoroughbred has the ability to establish a very dominating presence on the track, and he is definitely cut in of the mold of some past Kentucky Derby champions.
