2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
Washington State fans are still waiting for Mike Leach to revolutionize their program and explode onto the Pac-12 scene the way he did with Texas Tech in the Big 12. So far the best he's been able to do is a 6-7 season and a bowl collapse in 2013. Looking at the talent and schedule facing this team this year, I wouldn't expect fireworks. But I do think Leach will pull a few rabbits out of his hat this year, and Washington State could be in the mix for a bowl bid come December.
Obviously, the big question for this team is quarterback. They lose Connor Halliday, who was a really underrated signal caller for this team, and top receiver Vince Mayle. But Leach's system is pretty QB-friendly, and sophomore Luke Falk picked up some experience last year. The line is very stable with all five starters back, and that is a big key.
Leach's teams never play much defense. But they need to do better than allowing 38.6 points per game. They have a new coordinator and a new base package. And they better hope that turns into more turnovers because they were minus-17 last year in turnover differential.
The key for Washington State will be to make sure they don't choke away any winnable games, like last year's losses to Rutgers and Nevada. They open with three such games, including two home games against weak opponents and a revenge game at Rutgers. After that they get a bye week before what should be a shootout at Cal. Oregon State and Colorado are vulnerable this year, and the Cougars get both in Pullman. And Wazzou may need to win their Apple Cup rivalry game to get to a bowl.
I like Washington State. They went just 4-8 against the spread last year, and Leach has always done well as a big dog. I think Wazzou will get five wins in games that they should win, and I see them pulling an unlikely upset - maybe against Arizona State or at UCLA - to get bowl eligible. I like Wazzou 'over'.
