2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'

Seven quarterbacks. Utah State has used seven starting quarterbacks the past two seasons and still managed to win 19 of their 28 games. Coach Matt Wells has been a revelation in guiding this team, and with 15 starters back, including a key sixth-year senior, the Aggies could be Boise State's biggest impediment to Mountain West dominance.

The key super-senior is quarterback Chuckie Keeton. Injuries have sabotaged his past two seasons. But prior to that he was a first team All-WAC quarterback and an aspiring Heisman candidate. The Aggies also have four starters back on the offensive line, their top running back, and their top two receivers.If Keeton comes back in full form then the Aggies offense will be much better than last year's No. 78 scoring and No. 83 total offense rankings.

Defensively, the Aggies have been outstanding the past two years. They did lose three of their top four defenders, including stud Zach Vigil. But they have seven projected senior starters and should again be one of the top groups in the league.

Utah State's key early-season game is against in-state rival Utah, whom they are 1-13 against. The Aggies also need to avoid a major letdown/look-ahead situation at Fresno State on Oct. 10 leading up to a critical Friday night home game against Boise State on Oct. 16. The back half of Utah State's schedule is weak, with a trip to Air Force (whom they've dominated lately) and a home game against plucky Nevada.

It's impossible not to be impressed with what Wells and the Aggies have done. Not long ago they were one of the worst teams in the West (10-38 from 2006-2009). But I see them going 'under' thanks to the placement of the games on the schedule. If Keeton comes back strong then all bets are off. But my call in mid-July is on the 'under'.
