2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
Despite losing star quarterback Brett Hundley, the Bruins have to be considered one of the favorites to win the Pac-12 and a true national contender. Jim Mora has posted back-to-back 10-win seasons, and this could be his most talented team yet.
UCLA has 18 returning starters from last year's squad. And Hundley's replacement is the top-rated freshman quarterback recruit in the country. The Bruins have the other 10 offensive starters back, a 1,600-yard rusher in Paul Perkins, all five linemen, and their top five receivers. They are set to improve on last year's Top 40 offensive numbers.
Defensively, they are hoping that new coordinator Tom Bradley, formerly of Penn State, will step forward with a plan to get these guys playing hard-nosed ball. UCLA has some top-end talent on this side, namely Myles Jack and Kenny Clark. But they need to play better as a unit and they need to generate more turnovers.
So there's talent all over the field. But I don't trust Jim Mora. He has been a noted loser at every stop on his coaching resume. Last year's team lost three games. But they also nearly gave away games to Virginia, a bad Texas team, a weak Cal team, and a horrible Colorado club. In fact, six of their 10 wins came by one score or less.
UCLA has five Pac-12 road games this year, including a tough back-to-back to close the year (at Utah and at USC). But they avoid Oregon, and they should be a healthy favorite against all four of the league games they get at home.
There's no way that I trust UCLA to avoid an upset or two. They could live up to the hype and be a playoff contender. But I will call for three losses and will take the Bruins to stay 'under'.
