Former Baylor offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery will try to rebuild what was once of the top mid-major programs in the country as the new Golden Hurricane coach. The offensive guru inherits a team with a bevy of playmakers on that side of the ball, and Tulsa should fit right in with the defense-optional AAC squads.

Tulsa moved the ball well last year, finishing in the Top 40 in the nation in passing offense. But their 16.4 yards per point and No. 91-ranked scoring attack didn't help them in the old win-loss column.

Even if the Golden Hurricane had been more efficient with the ball, the defense couldn't stop anyone. The only team they held below 30 points was pathetic SMU, and Tulsa finished No. 114 in the land in total defense. There are two or three decent players to work with here, but this season's success or failure hinges on how much progress the Hurricanes can make on this side of the ball.

Tulsa had won an average of nine games a season from 2005 to 2012 before Bill Blankenship drove the program off a cliff. Montgomery was a sharp hire, and he should be able to turn this group around. But this is a young, underclassmen-dominant squad. Montgomery will lay his foundation this season, but I think expecting six wins would be overly optimistic.
