2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
I was one of the only analysts in the country that was selling Stanford last year. After for straight years with double-digit wins, they slid back to just eight last season. Granted, they played better than their record suggests; three of their losses were to Top 25 teams by three points or less. But I don't know that we should automatically expect a bounce back from a program that's no longer stocked with Jim Harbaugh's recruits.
The Cardinal play a tough, grinding, physical style of football. They want to pound the ball on the ground and win with defense. But they lost seven defensive starters from last year's Top 10 group. They are really young in the trenches. But they have depth in the back seven.
A lot falls on senior quarterback Kevin Hogan. Stanford has nine offensive starters back, led by Hogan. But they weren't very good offensively last year, so I'm not sure what the ceiling for this group is, even with another year under their belts.
Stanford's schedule is relentless. The good news is that, unlike last year when they played six of their last nine games on the road, this season they get to play six of their last eight at home. The bad news is that their nonconference games are against three dangerous teams: at Northwestern, versus Central Florida and versus Notre Dame.
Also, the Pac-12 is a bear this season. There are no gimme games. But fortunately Stanford's road games come against three bottom-feeders and USC. And they get Arizona, UCLA and Oregon all at home.
I don't think that Stanford is that good this year. But they have a tailor-made schedule. This is a good number for the Cardinal; I have them getting nine wins. But I'm going to say that if they miss they are going to miss high. I'll take the 'over' here. But I can already tell you that I'm planning on cleaning up on the 'under' next year.
