The Atlanta Falcons have quickly gone from friend to foe for bettors, Coach Mike Leach has finally gotten things going at Washington State, and LeBron James and the Cavaliers have sunk their backers to the tune of five straight ATS losses. Here are this week's hot and cold sports bets.
Atlanta Falcons (4-5 ATS, five straight losses)
The Falcons haven't just struggled against the number as since their perfect 4-0 start they have dropped three of four straight up. Things have been even worse against the number as last week the Falcons made it five straight ATS losses after falling to San Francisco 17-16 as a 7.5-point favorite.
Atlanta's recent struggles have largely been the result of a stagnant offense, which is somewhat difficult to understand given the weapons on that side of the ball. In the last three weeks the Falcons have scored just 46 combined points.
The main issue in Atlanta has been a lack of a running game. Last week, the Falcons could muster just 17 rushing yards against the 49ers. Devonta Freeman, who is the NFL's second-leading rusher after a brilliant start to the season, was held to just 12 yards on the ground.
The Falcons are off this week but will try and get back on the beam versus the number when they host the Colts on Nov. 22.
Green Bay Packers (5-3 ATS, three straight losses)
Little seemed to go wrong for the Packers the first month-plus of the season, but that has quickly become but a distant memory. Green Bay has dropped its last two games straight up, both on the road, and the last three versus the number. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has actually started throwing interceptions after a flawless start to the season, and the defense has had no answer for elite quarterbacks (Peyton Manning, Cam Newton) the past two weeks.
This week the Packers return to Lambeau Field where they will take on the struggling Detroit Lions as an 11.5-point favorite.
Other hot NFL bets: Minnesota Vikings (7-1 ATS, seven straight wins), Oakland Raiders (5-3, three straight wins)
Other cold NFL bets: Detroit Lions (1-7 ATS, four straight losses), Washington Redskins (3-5 ATS, three straight losses.
College Football
Washington State (7-2 ATS, six straight wins)
Coach Mike Leach is finally gaining traction in his fourth season in Pullman. The offensive mastermind now has the players to fit his innovative system, and the results have been beyond expectations. During their current six-game winning streak against the spread, the Cougars have twice won straight up as an underdog and probably should have beat Stanford as a 10-point underdog.
Washington State is simply getting it done this season. Perhaps the Cougars low-profile nationally will allow for continued value moving forward. Next up, Washington State will head south to take on UCLA at the Rose Bowl as a 10.5-point underdog.
San Diego State (5-4 ATS, five straight wins)
San Diego State's turnaround after an abysmal start has largely been the result of its excellent play in the trenches. The Aztecs' ground game ranks 23rd in the nation with an average of 214.1 rushing yards per game, while the defense has allowed just 107.6 rushing yards per game to rank 10 th in the nation.
During the Aztecs current ATS streak, they have twice won straight up as an underdog and once in a pick'em game. This week San Diego State will host Wyoming (1-9 S/U) as a 24-point favorite.
Other hot college football bets: Bowling Green (7-2 ATS, four straight wins), Maryland (6-3 ATS, four straight wins), Oklahoma State (6-3 ATS, four straight wins)
Other cold college football bets: Massachusetts (2-7 ATS, five straight losses), West Virginia (2-6 ATS, five straight losses), Kentucky (2-7 ATS, five straight losses), Indiana (4-5 ATS, four straight losses), Army (4-5 ATS, four straight losses), Texas A&M (4-5 ATS, four straight losses)
NBA
Cleveland Cavaliers (3-5 ATS, five straight losses)
The Cavaliers have won seven straight SU since a season-opening loss, but LeBron James and company have not been kind to bettors this season. Cleveland made it five straight losses ATS Tuesday in a 118-114 SU win against Utah as a 5.5-point favorite.
Yes, the Cavs are winning, but they have yet to look like the same dominant squad from a year ago. Cleveland will next hit the road for a three-game road trip: versus the Knicks on Friday, Bucks on Saturday and Pistons on Tuesday.
Other cold NBA bets: Brooklyn Nets (2-5 ATS, five straight losses)
