This week's look at the hottest and coldest bets in sports includes a couple of streaking college football teams from the Pac-12 as well as two NFL teams headed in opposite directions. In addition, the early part of the NHL season has begun to produce an array of betting trends. Here's this week's look at the hottest and coldest bets in sports:
College Football
Stanford, 6-1 ATS
The Cardinal made it six straight covers last week with a 31-14 pounding of Washington as a 14.5-point home favorite. This week Stanford hits the road as a 13.5-point favorite against Washington State, which in its own right has also been a profitable proposition with four straight covers.
Since its upset loss to Northwestern in the season opener, Stanford has been hitting on all cylinders. The Cardinal rank 23rd in the nation in points scored at 37.4 points a game and are 32nd in points allowed at 20.6 a game. They figure to be able to move the ball again this week against a Cougars team that has allowed 31 points per game this season.
Oregon State, 1-6 ATS
The Beavers have been beaten by the spread in four straight following their 17-13 straight up loss to Colorado as a one-point home favorite. This week they are a huge 21.5-point road underdog against a nationally-ranked Utah team that figures to be smarting following its straight up loss to USC last week.
Oregon State has been outscored by an average of 31.1-20.0 this season. Offensively, the Beavers have really struggled in recent weeks. The only real weapon for Oregon State has been dual-threat quarterback Seth Collin, who leads the team in rushing with 536 yards on 99 carries this season. The problem has largely been the passing game, which ranks 117th in the nation with just 153.1 yards a game.
The good news for the Beavers is Utah has not been particularly effective stopping the pass this season. The Utes have allowed 257.2 yards per game through the air, which is well above the Pac-12 average.
NFL
Minnesota Vikings, 5-1 ATS
The Vikings made it five straight covers last week in a 28-19 straight up win against Detroit as a one-point road underdog. This week Minnesota hits the road again to take on a Chicago Bears team that's coming off its bye week 3-3 both straight up and against the spread.
The success of the Vikings has largely been a product of a stout defense. While Teddy Bridgewater and the offense rank 30th in the NFL in total yards (325.5 per game) and 26th in points scored (20.7), its been a completely different story on the opposite side of the ball. Minnesota ranks No. 7 in total defense (338.8 yards allowed per game) and is third in points allowed at just 17 a game.
Those numbers figure to hold up this week. Chicago is averaging just 20.0 points per game, which ranks 28th in the NFL.
Dallas Cowboys, 1-5 ATS
The Cowboys hoped to tread water after quarterback Tony Romo suffered a broken collarbone in Week 2, but things haven't gone exactly as planned. Since the injury, the Cowboys have lost four consecutive games both straight up and against the spread.
The quarterback situation is a mess in Dallas as neither Brandon Weeden nor Matt Cassel have shown the ability to produce at a level necessary of a starting signal-caller. Head coach Jason Garrett has already said Cassel will again be at the controls this week despite throwing three critical interceptions in a 27-20 straight-up loss to the New York Giants.
Things don't figure to get any easier this week as the defending NFC champion Seattle Seahawks and its ball-hawking defense comes to town.
NHL
Pittsburgh Penguins, 0-6-2 O/U
The Penguins have failed to register an "over" this season despite consistently having one of the lowest posted totals in the league game after game. A look at the numbers and it's easy to see why. Pittsburgh has averaged just 1.6 goals a game this season while converting a measly 7.1 percent of its power play opportunities. Conversely, the Penguins rank third in goals allowed at just 2.0 a game and its 84.6 percent penalty kill percentage ranks among the league's elite.
Pittsburgh has three games this week, and it appears a potential "over" could be in the cards. On Wednesday, the Penguins take on a Washington Capitals that tops the NHL with 4.1 goals a game; and Friday, the Buffalo Sabres come to town. They have allowed 3.3 goals a game this season, which ranks near the bottom of the NHL.
