The college football slate this week features a couple of interesting matchups involving teams riding hot and cold steaks against the spread, while in the NBA the New Jersey Nets have flipped the script entirely by making the hot list after previously being one of the coldest bets in the Association. Meanwhile in the NFL, two teams with sub-.500 straight up records are featured after earning three straight ATS victories.
Here is this week's edition of the hottest and coldest bets in sports.
College Football
Texas A&M (4-6 ATS, five straight losses)
After a sterling 4-1 ATS mark to start the season, the Aggies have dropped five straight ATS, which includes a 41-17 straight up win against Western Carolina as a 33.5-point favorite last week. Next up Texas A&M travels to take on Vanderbilt (4-6 SU) as a 7-point favorite. After a tough stretch by the Aggies, it was good to see them dominate a lesser foe last week as that can often lead to a reversal in form.
Tulane (6-4 ATS, four straight wins)
The Green Wave has struggled to a 3-7 SU mark this season but has certainly been a friend to underdog bettors the last month as they've won four straight ATS all while getting points. Tulane extended its ATS streak last week with a 34-31 straight up win at Army as a 3-point 'dawg. Once again, the Green Wave is an underdog this week, this time as a 3-point road underdog against SMU (1-9 SU, 4-6 ATS), which itself is riding a four-game ATS losing streak. Look for plenty of points in this one as SMU has allowed at least 40 points in every game but one this season.
Army (4-6 ATS, five straight losses)
Army is a 4.5-point home 'dawg against Rutgers, which itself has lost four straight ATS, so something will have to give in this one. The Black Knights dropped their fifth straight against the number last week with the loss to Tulane noted above. Army's triple-option attack has yet to get on track this season, which has resulted in the Black Knights averaging just 22.7 points per game this season, which ranks 102nd in the FBS.
With that said, it would be tough to lay points with an Rutgers team that's been equally as ineffective this season.
Other hot college football bets: Washington State (8-2 ATS, seven straight wins), San Diego State (6-4 ATS, six straight wins), Oklahoma (8-2 ATS, five straight wins), Air Force (7-3 ATS, four straight wins), Oregon (6-4 ATS, four straight wins).
Other cold college football bets: Kentucky (2-8, six straight losses) East Carolina (4-6 ATS, four losses), SMU (4-6 ATS, four losses), Rutgers (3-7 ATS, four straight losses), Hawaii (3-8 ATS, four straight losses.
NBA
New York Knicks (8-4, five straight wins)
The Knicks made it five straight covers Tuesday night with 102-94 straight up home win against Charlotte as a 1-point favorite. New York is a perfect 5-0 ATS on the road, and this week they embark on a four-game road trip to Oklahoma City on Friday, Houston on Saturday, Miami on Monday and Orlando on Thursday. Knicks rookie forward Kristaps Porzingis has looked like a budding star in the early going while averaging 12.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. One transcendent player, as Porzingis very well could be, can turn an entire franchise around in the NBA. However, this isn't the easiest road trip coming up for the Knicks. The next week will be a good test and should give a better idea of just where New York belongs in the Eastern Conference pecking order.
Brooklyn Nets (6-6, ATS five straight wins)
What a difference a week makes. Last week in this space we noted the Nets were 1-6 ATS and had lost five consecutive versus the number. That is now a distant memory as the Nets have reeled off five straight ATS wins, with five of those coming on the road. Of course, Brooklyn is still just 2-10 straight up.
This week the Nets have a home-and-home with Boston on Friday and Sunday then head to Oklahoma City on Wednesday. While Brooklyn is certainly nothing to write home about, they have been consistently getting lots of points to work with given their recent history. That makes them worth a look this week.
Houston Rockets (3-9 ATS, five straight losses)
Houston's 4-7 straight up mark to start the season was enough to get coach Kevin McHale fired on Wednesday. Things haven't been much better versus the number, either. The Rockets made it five straight ATS losses on Wednesday in a 108-103 straight up win against Portland in overtime as a 7-point home favorite.
The Rockets are simply a mess this season. The pieces on the roster don't seem to fit, and good luck to interim J.B Bickerstaff getting them to play any defense. Houston has allowed 108.1 points per game this season, which is the second-most in the NBA, while allowing opponents to shoot a robust 46.5 percent from the field.
Next up for Houston is a road game at Memphis on Friday and home games against New York on Saturday and Memphis again on Wednesday. Perhaps Bickerstaff can shake things up, but the problems seem to run much deeper in Houston than just the coach.
Other hot NBA bets: None
Other cold NBA bets: Cleveland Cavaliers (3-8 ATS, eight straight losses), Atlanta Hawks (5-7-1 ATS, five straight losses).
NFL
Jacksonville Jaguars (5-4 ATS, three straight wins)
The Jaguars have been playing better of late following a 1-5 straight up start to the season. Last week Jacksonville made it three straight ATS wins with a 22-20 straight up road win at Baltimore as a 5.5-point underdog. Bortles has continued to be inconsistent but has shown flashes that give reason for optimism. The Jags will look to continue their streak Thursday night as a 3-point home favorite against Tennessee, which is 2-2 ATS on the road this season. However, this may not be the best of matchups for the Jaguars. They have struggled stopping the pass this season, and the Titans rely on the arm of Marcus Mariota to make its offense go.
Kansas City Chiefs (4-5 ATS, three straight wins)
The Chiefs are another team on the rise. After a 1-5 start to the season both straight up and ATS, Kansas City has reeled off three straight wins both straight up and versus the number. Propelling the Chiefs is a defense that's allowed just 10.6 points a game during the streak. This week Kansas City is a 3-point road favorite against struggling San Diego. This figures a good matchup for the Chiefs, as the Chargers defense doesn't scare anyone, and on the other side of the ball it's strength-against-strength (Phillip Rivers vs. Chiefs pass defense).
Other hot NFL bets: Minnesota (8-1 ATS, eight straight wins)
Other cold NFL bets: Green Bay (5-4 ATS, four straight losses), Atlanta Falcons (4-5 ATS, five straight losses.
