Sports Betting Futures Odds: Not Too Early-Ohio State Favored to Repeat
by Ricky Dimon - 1/14/2015
The first-ever College Football Playoff ended two days ago, which means it's high time to start thinking about the second-ever College Football Playoff. As
for events on the much more immediate horizon, the tennis and golf seasons are about to heat up-literally. The golfers are in Hawaii, while Novak Djokovic,
Roger Federer, and company are preparing for the Australian Open.

2015-16 National Championship
Ohio State (+450)
- First Braxton Miller went down. Then it was J.T. Barrett. Enter Cardale Jones, whose three starts in 2015 came in Ohio State's three biggest games of the
season (all wins, of course). It is unclear just how many quarterbacks will be back for the Buckeyes' title defense, but it's safe to say they should be in
good shape at the position.
TCU (+700)
- TCU was the first team left out of the inaugural College Football Playoff, and it made a statement about such treatment by hammering Ole Miss 42-3 in the
Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. A whopping 10 starters are expected to return on offense, and six more should be coming back on the other side of the ball.
Alabama (+800)
- Are Nick Saban and Alabama ever out of the mix? The Crimson Tide were the favorites heading into the four-team playoff before getting ousted by Ohio
State. Amari Cooper, T.J. Yeldon, and Landon Collins are all going pro, so both the offense and defense will take a hit. Still, 'Bama doesn't rebuild; it
reloads.
Baylor (+1200)
- Art Briles cried foul over the fact that Baylor was left out of the playoff. Unlike TCU, however, the Bears did nothing about it in their postseason game
and blew a huge lead before losing to Michigan State 42-41 in the Cotton Bowl. Bryce Petty is gone, so there will be a new QB in Waco. Oklahoma and USC are
also +1200.
Men's Australian Open
Novak Djokovic (-110)
- Djokovic is 43-6 lifetime at the Australian Open, which begins on Monday (Sunday evening in the United States). He has also won it four times. The
tournament is quite simply the world No. 1's best Grand Slam. Djokovic lost early last week in Doha, but that should not have any impact on his prospects
at a much more important event.
Roger Federer (+550)
- Federer went without a slam title in 2014 and he has not won a major since Wimbledon in 2012, but last season was still a resurgent one for the
33-year-old Swiss. He finished runner-up to Djokovic at Wimbledon and played extremely well throughout the fall. Federer is looking for his fifth triumph
Down Under and first since 2010.
Rafael Nadal (+600)
- Nadal is a proverbial wild card heading into Melbourne after missing much of last year's second half-including the U.S. Open-due to a wrist injury and
appendicitis. The third-ranked Spaniard wanted to get some match practice under his belt in Doha, but he was stunned in his opener there by world No. 127
Michael Berrer.
Andy Murray (+650)
- Murray's two slam victories have come at the U.S. Open and Wimbledon, but he is no slouch at the Aussie. The sixth-ranked Scot is a three-time runner-up
and has not lost prior to the quarterfinals since 2009. His relatively low ranking by his standards, however, will put him at the risk of a bad draw.
Sony Open
Jason Day (+1050)
- When Day is healthy, there is nothing this guy can't do. He is rarely without some physical problem, but right now all systems appear ready to launch.
The Australian fired a final-round 62 on Monday to finish third at the Tournament of Champions, just one shot off the lead.
Jimmy Walker (+1350)
- What's not to like about J-Walk? The guy was awesome throughout the 2014 campaign, winning three times and posting 10 top-10 showings (including three at
majors). Walker won the Sony Open last year, so he knows what he is doing at this course. He also finished runner-up to Patrick Reed in a playoff on
Monday.
Matt Kuchar (+1700)
- Kuchar does not win a whole lot, but he almost always gives himself a chance as one of the PGA Tour's most consistent performers. The world No. 11 is
coming off a decent showing at the champions' event, where he was T-17 at 12-under. Kuchar posted a solid T-8 finish last January at the Sony.
Chris Kirk (+1700)
- Kirk's credentials are similar to those of Walker, namely an outstanding season in 2014 and recent success in Hawaii. The 29-year-old and former UGA
Bulldog placed second to Walker at this tournament a year ago, just one shot back. He was T-14 at the Tournament of Champions after matching Day with a 62
on Monday.
Oscars Best Picture
Boyhood (-500)
- Boyhood, which was filmed over a 12-year span, is the considerable favorite after cleaning up at last Sunday's Golden Globes. It won Best Drama
Motion Picture, Richard Linklater won Best Director of a Motion Picture, and Patricia Arquette won Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.
Birdman (+700)
- Michael Keaton earned Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy honors at the Golden Globes, but Birdman got edged out by The Grand Budapest Hotel for Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture. Birdman did take home the globe for Best Screenplay of a Motion
Picture.
Selma (+800)
- Selma is-you guessed it-the story of Martin Luther King, Jr. The controversial but pretty much must-see drama went into the Golden Globes with
four nominations but took home just one trophy. John Legend and Common were awarded with Best Original Song for the movie's theme, "Glory."
The Imitation Game (+800)
- What transpired over the weekend does not bode well for Benedict Cumberbatch and the rest of The Imitation Game crew. The movie, which focuses
on cracking Nazi codes during World War II, had five nominations but came away empty-handed. Unbroken, directed by Angelina Jolie, is +2000.
