As football season looms large on the horizon, the golf year-at least in its most important form-is winding down. The furious summer stretch is concluding
with the last major of 2015 this week at Whistling Straits. Rory McIlroy is back from injury, but that does not change the fact that Jordan Spieth is an
overwhelming favorite at the PGA Championship.

PGA Championship
Jordan Spieth (+550)
- Spieth was not far off from heading to Kohler, Wisconsin, this week with a chance to win the calendar-year Grand Slam. After triumphing at the Masters
and U.S. Open, the 22-year-old came within one shot of getting into a playoff at St. Andrews. Spieth is coming off a T10 showing at the Bridgestone
Invitational, where he fired a final-round 66.
Rory McIlory (+900) - An ankle injury (sustained while playing soccer) forced McIlory out of the British Open, so he has not played a tournament since a T9 performance at the U.S. Open. The world No. 1, whose 2015 major slate also includes a fourth-place finish in Augusta, has been hitting balls for two weeks. McIlroy turned in a T3 at Whistling Straits in 2010.
Dustin Johnson (+1200) - Johnson was the story the last time this event graced the fairways of Whistling Straits. In 2010, he apparently had a putt to win that missed-thus Johnson would be in a playoff with Martin Kaymer and Bubba Watson. Instead, a two-stroke penalty ended his hopes. Johnson's form could hardly be better right now, but can he get it done on Sunday?
Jason Day (+1400)
- Perhaps nobody is hotter and more due for a major title than Day. The Australian contended at the U.S. Open (T9), the British Open (T4) and bounced right
back after a heartbreaker at St. Andrews to win the Canadian Open. He turned in a solid T12 performance at last week's Bridgestone Invitational.
NFL Week 1
(odds provided by BetOnline Sportsbook)
Philadelphia Eagles (-1) at Atlanta Falcons
- One of the two Monday Night Football Week 1 games, Philadelphia vs. Atlanta, is an intriguing showdown between two teams with a lot more questions than
answers. Chip Kelly put his Eagles roster through an overhaul this offseason, while the Falcons are set to begin a new era under head coach Dan Quinn.
New York Giants (+5.5) at Dallas Cowboys
- This NFC East rivalry game pits two teams coming off much different 2014 campaigns. Dallas rolled to the division crown at 12-4, whereas New York
stumbled to a 6-10 mark. The Cowboys have won four in a row in this head-to-head series and five of the last six, although almost every one between these
two is competitive.
Baltimore Ravens (+4) at Denver Broncos
- Two playoff teams from last season are set to collide in Week 1. While the Ray Rice era is over in Baltimore, the Peyton Manning era is still going
strong in Denver. Manning and company went 8-0 at home during the regular season in 2014, losing only at Seattle, New England, St. Louis, and Cincinnati.
Green Bay Packers (-5.5) at Chicago Bears
- Only three divisional contests are taking place in Week 1, with one pitting the Packers against NFC North foe Chicago. No road team is a bigger favorite
than Green Bay; in fact, Aaron Rodgers and friends are the biggest favorites of the entire week along with Dallas. Chicago went 5-11 last year and ended on
a five-game skid.
Premier League
Chelsea (+175)
- The 2015-16 Barclays Premier League season is underway and Chelsea is looking for back-to-back titles. With a 26-3-9 record for 87 points, the Blues
coasted to the 2014-15 championship. They are off to a somewhat inauspicious start this time around, having tied Swansea City last Saturday.
Manchester City (+225) - Man City disappointed for the most part last season, but it still finished second on the table with 79 points. The Sky Blues made a perfect start to 2015-16, blanking West Brom 3-0 on Monday. A loaded roster includes Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero, and goalie Joe Hart.
Arsenal (+450) - Is there any manager in all of sports with a better-suited name to coach his team than Arsene Wenger and Arsenal? Well, no, but that's neither here nor there. The Gunners are off to a slow start after losing to West Ham United 2-0 on Sunday. They are looking to build on a third-place showing last season (75 points).
Manchester United (+500)
- If there is a "Big 4" in the EPL, Man United found itself in the cellar after the 2014-15 campaign. The Reds went 20-8-10 for 70 points, six clear of
fifth-place Tottenham Hotspur but well back of everyone else. An own goal helped United beat the Spurs 1-0 in this season's opening match.
MLB Regular-Season Home Runs
(odds provided by Sportsbook.ag)
Mike Trout (+140) - The All-Star Game MVP is tied for the major-league lead with 33 homers. He came storming out of the break with six dingers in 11 games, but he has since gone deep once in his last nine. Trout (.304, 69 RBIs) is batting .171 in August to see his average plunge from .317 at the beginning of the month.
Nelson Cruz (+150) - Cruz also registers with 33 home runs at the moment. The Seattle Mariners' 35-year-old slugger is trending in the opposite direction from Trout, too. He is batting .432 in August with six long balls. Since going 13 straight games in mid-July without a homer, Cruz has hit 12 in his last 20.
Josh Donaldson (+1200) - Don't sleep on Donaldson, who is on fire for the surging Toronto Blue Jays. The third baseman has driven in more runs than anyone in baseball (83), and his homer count has climbed to 31 with nine in his last 17 outings. Donaldson has hit safely in 16 of his last 19 games, with eight multi-hit performances during this torrid stretch.
Bryce Harper (+1800) - Harper is topping the National League home-run chart with 29. But he has none in the Washington Nationals' last 12 games. Albert Pujols (30 homers), Chris Davis (30), Giancarlo Stanton (27), and J.D. Martinez (30) are also +1800.
