2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
The fact that South Florida, as recently as 2008, was a legit Top 10 team in the country now seems like some strange fever dream. The forgotten stepchild of Florida football has gone a combined 9-27 over the last three seasons, and they don't seem like they are close to a breakthrough in Willie Taggart's crucial third season in Tampa.
South Florida returns just 10 starters from last year's team. They are still extremely young, with as many as nine potential freshmen and sophomores in the starting 22. But Taggart, who has shaken up his staff and tried to restock the roster, needs results.
All four of South Florida's wins last year were by just one score and an average of 4.5 points per win. But while they were sneaking out wins they also had some respectable efforts against teams like Maryland, East Carolina, Memphis and Central Florida. So they kind of ran the gamut on being pretty good and pretty bad.
I actually do think that South Florida is an improving team, and I think they could be setting up to make a big leap forward in 2016. They have a very soft early October with home games against Memphis, Syracuse, and SMU, and the lone road game at Connecticut. Add in what should be a win over Florida A&M in the opener and they have a chance to get their four wins before Halloween.
And they better get to four wins by then. Because the odds are that this team won't win again after All Hallows' Eve. Four of their last five games are on the road and all against teams in the upper half of the division. The one home game is against division favorite Cincinnati. So Taggart better build up some goodwill and show progress with some early wins because things could get ugly in November.
