2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
There's nowhere to go but up for the Mustangs after the 2014 season went completely off the rails. Their coach quit during the season, and the Mustangs were so overmatched they were outscored by an average of 30 points per game. Of course, that season average was lower than their comical opening month in which they were outscored 202-12 in their first four games.
SMU did manage a major victory this offseason when it was able to lure former Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris, one of the most highly-sought-after assistants in the nation, to fill the vacant head coaching position. Morris came up as a Texas high school coach, so it is a homecoming of sort. But he's got a long way to go to get this Mustangs squad up to a competitive level.
SMU is awful again this year. And they will get plastered in September again with games against Baylor and TCU, whom combined to bomb the Mustangs by a combed score of 101-0. But they have somewhat winnable early-season home games against North Texas and James Madison. Also, the AAC is not a good league by any stretch of the imagination, so there could be a chance for SMU to steal a win or two.
I'm going to call for SMU to work its way to three wins this year. Home games against UNT, Madison, Tulsa and Tulane offer essentially their only four opportunities to win games. So the margin of error is slim. The talent on this team is nil. But I think they'll be much more stable and organized under Morris, and I expect to see several signs of improvement.
