2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Push'
San Jose State football has ridden the roller coaster over the last five years, watching its win total round out from one to five to a peak of 11 to six and down to three last year. SJSU was fodder last season, taking all but one of its nine losses by less than 10 points, but they look like an improved team in 2015 and should be an improved team at the window (3-9 ATS last year) if not on their overall record.
San Jose State has 10 starters back on offense from last year. Which would be good in most situations. But not when the Spartans averaged just 19.3 points per game last year. (By comparison, conference champ Boise State averaged 39.2 points per game.) They have their starting quarterback, three top rushers, three top wideouts and four of their five linemen back.
The Spartans boasted the No. 1 passing defense in the country last year and have three of their four starters in the secondary back. But they were No. 116 against the rush, and their feeble front seven averages about 240 pounds, so they should get run over again.
There is absolutely nothing easy about SJSU's schedule. They open with four of their first six games on the road, including games against Oregon State and Auburn. They also have three of their other toughest games - SDSU, BYU and Boise State - at home and a tough lookahead spot at Hawaii before the Boise game.
There are a ton of reasons not to like the Spartans. But there are some statistical indicators that suggest they are due for a big bounce back season. I will split the difference and call for a 4-8 season and a 'push'.
