2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
The Aztecs have seen their win total drop each of the last two seasons, and their seven wins in 2014 were the program's lowest since 2009. But San Diego State is a team with a lot of buzz heading into the 2015 season, and it looks like Rocky Long is ready to make his mark in California.
Maxwell Smith, the former starting quarterback at Kentucky, is set to take the reigns for the Aztecs and inject a lot of life into the SDSU offense. He won't be expected to do it all, though, as running back Donnel Pumphrey (1,867 yards and 20 touchdowns last year) will be a bell cow once again.
Defense is really where Long makes his mark, and last year's unit was no exception. San Diego State was in the Top 20 in the country in scoring defense, passing defense and total defense. They have eight starters and 10 of their top 13 tacklers back.
The Aztecs have two tough nonconference road games at California and at Penn State. But beyond that every game on their schedule is winnable. They have the benefit of playing in the league's West Division - by far the weakest - and there is nothing that should stop them from going to the Mountain West title game.
I really like the Aztecs to go 'over' their total here. Smith can play, and the defense is one of the best in the league. They get Utah State at home and avoid Boise State. And SDSU could be favored in all but one of their league games. I think this is a nine-win team, and this is one of my favorite totals plays. Take the 'over'.
