2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
I came up short with my prediction for Purdue last year as I thought they would get to four wins and go 'over'. A one-point loss at Minnesota and a touchdown defeat at Indiana in the season finale prevented that from coming to fruition. I don't think they'll get that close again this year.
Purdue does have 15 starters back. But they are still extremely young; they are projected to have just five senior starters versus six freshmen or sophomore starters. They also weren't all that close in their losses last season, being outscored by eight points per game with an average margin of defeat of 15.1 points. They have a lot of ground to make up.
Purdue opens on the road against a Marshall team that won 13 games last year. After that they get four of five games at home. Unfortunately, Purdue could be either an underdog or a very small favorite against Virginia Tech and Bowling Green in their other two key nonconference games.
The Big Ten schedule is frontloaded. I don't see them beating Michigan State, Minnesota, Wisconsin or Nebraska in their first four. But after that they get Illinois and Indiana down in West Lafayette, and a game at Iowa isn't as daunting as it would've been several years ago.
I think that five wins is overly optimistic for Purdue. As long as they beat either Marshall or Bowling Green then they have a shot at four wins. But a 1-7 start - which is possible - for a coach that is 4-20 over his last two seasons would be disastrous. I have to play this team 'under' this year (although I think they can 'push') and I'll be watching for them as a high-value team in 2016.
