Bob Stoops sees the writing on the wall in Norman. He knows that 8-5 seasons are unacceptable around those parts, so he made some offseason changes, most notably bringing in a new offensive coordinator to install a version of the Air Raid offense and adding a new starting quarterback to run it. The hope is that all this adds up to a big season and a vault back to the top of the Big 12.

Texas Tech transfer Baker Mayfield is eligible this season and will be under center for the Sooners. He leads an offense that features one of the top one-two running back duos in the nation with Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon, who is eligible after being suspended for punching a woman in the face. OU does have to replace four offensive linemen. But the fill-ins include three seniors.

The OU offense is a big storyline. But not the biggest. The Sooners defense was awful last year, finishing No. 117 in the country against the pass. Just five starters are back on defense, and this group needs to figure things out quickly.

The Sooners open with three of four games at home. That could help them build momentum into a key stretch at Texas (in Dallas) and at Kansas State. Also, Oklahoma's final three games are a bear: at Baylor, TCU at home and then at Oklahoma State for the Bedlam game.

The Sooners are a tough team to read this year. All the focus is on TCU and Baylor atop the Big 12. And Oklahoma State and West Virginia are nestled into the sleeper/spoiler roles. An early-season win at Tennessee would be big. And if they get that one then a 9-0 start isn't out of the question. Regardless, I think they have the talent and focus to get to 10 wins this year, and I would play the Sooners 'over'.
