For the first time in this century I can say that the Raiders are heading in the right direction. With their coach and quarterback firmly in place, Oakland is building a foundation that might have them legitimately competitive within the next few seasons.

Unfortunately, they're not there yet. And this season looks like it will mark the 13^th year in a row that Oakland has failed to get over .500. Last year the Raiders were outscored by 12.1 points per game. They should shrink that gap this season. But I wouldn't expect the improvement to manifest itself into too many more wins this year.

I'm a fan of Jack Del Rio's work. He was an excellent coach in Jacksonville. (Think about that for a second: he had the Jaguars in the playoffs. The Jaguars. Despite playing in the same division as Peyton Manning and Steve McNair.) He is easily the best coach that they've had in Oakland in the past two-plus decades.

Derek Carr looks like he has the potential to be a franchise quarterback. He has a big arm and is fearless. He also impressed me by throwing only 12 interceptions last season. Yes, Carr's yards per attempt were a comically low 5.3. But Carr held up well behind a makeshift line and despite playing without any real receivers.

But Carr is just one of the very talented young pieces that the Raiders are setting at the core of the team. Latavius Murray, guard Gabe Jackson and Amari Cooper each look like keepers with Carr on offense, while Khalil Mack is the real deal on defense.

Oakland has to still be an 'under' play this year, although I wouldn't put money on it. They are going to be a very live underdog. They played both New England and Seattle within a touchdown last season and had upsets over Kansas City, San Francisco and Buffalo. I think they'll be able to do the same this time around. But they have to travel a ton this year and have six games that kickoff at 10 a.m. PST. Their youth and lack of depth will hold them back. But this year will provide valuable seasoning for future wins for this franchise.
