2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'

The Heels have been projected as a "sleeper team" and a "team to watch" for the past three seasons. Instead they have been a dud, watching their season win total drop the past two seasons while going just 21-17 so far under Larry Fedora. The pieces are in place for a big year in 2015, though (stop me if you've heard that one), and this is a crucial season for Fedora's regime.

The Heels have nine starters back on offense and were even better than their 2014 numbers suggested. Senior quarterback Marquise Williams has been streaky and is coming back from injury. But I'll be surprised if this isn't a Top 30 scoring unit this year.

The key will be the maturation of the defense. They brought in Gene Chizik to fix this train wreck of a unit. Six starters from last year are back. But I expect wholesale changes in Chizik's first season.

If North Carolina can top South Carolina in the opening game (played in nearby Charlotte) then UNC could be primed for a big opening two months. After their opener they get five of their next six at home, and the Heels should be favored in all of them. After a late October primetime, mid-week trip to mediocre Pittsburgh, the Heels have two more home games. A closing kick at Virginia Tech and at N.C. State is difficult. But I think UNC has a shot to finally fulfill some expectations.

Call me crazy, but I'm buying into the hype with this team once more. I do think UNC will go 8-4. But if I'm wrong I think it will be because they overachieve (for once) rather than underachieve. And if they beat the Gamecocks in Week 1 then watch out.
