Basic strategy teasers are promising to close the NFL season on a strong note. The wager went a perfect 3-0 last week and pushed its record to 13-1 over the last four weeks, which is a spectacular mark for any type of bet. The teasers are two-team, six-point wagers that use 7.5 to 8.5 point favorites and 1.5 to 2.5 point underdogs to manipulate those spreads past the NFL key numbers of three and seven. Basic strategy teasers have changed over the years and are not quite as powerful as they once were (because the oddsmakers adjusted the vig to even things out), but they are still the best way to use a teaser during the NFL season.
For Week 14, there are three more solid teasers to choose from, all of them featuring home favorites being teased down to fewer than three points. Let's take a closer look at each wager and figure out which are the best bets for the week.
Thursday Night Game: Arizona Cardinals vs Minnesota Vikings
Spread: Cardinals -7.5
Six-point teaser: Cardinals -1.5
This might be the matchup of the week, particularly for a slumping Minnesota team that is locked in a tight division race with Green Bay. Arizona is the highest-scoring team in the NFL, while the Vikings rely on an excellent defense and grinding games away on the back of Adrian Peterson. Minnesota has been one of the best ATS teams in the NFL all season, so taking the original spread almost feels like a given. The issue is whether they can actually win this game? Along with Arizona's stellar offense, the team also employs one of the best defenses in the league. Prognosis: Minnesota has lost two of three, and the team's record may be a product of a front-loaded schedule. This is an excellent spot to take Arizona.
Carolina Panthers vs Atlanta Falcons
Spread: Panthers -8
Six-point teaser: Panthers -2
I've been saying that Carolina is bound to lose a game since Week 5, and it still hasn't happened. Maybe the team is destined to run the table, or maybe they are not. One of the Panthers biggest tests, however, will come over the next few weeks when they must face division rival Atlanta twice before the season ends. Wins keep getting more difficult to come by, and Carolina needed a huge pass from Cam Newton late in the game to pull out its 12th win of the year. Overall, Carolina has been spectacular against the spread with a 9-3 mark, while Atlanta has been one of the worst. Prognosis: we cannot keep shying away from Carolina simply because a loss might be coming. The Panthers look spectacular, and this teaser feels solid.
Denver Broncos vs Oakland Raiders
Spread: Broncos -8.5
Six-point teaser: Broncos -2.5
Quarterback Brock Osweiler has been poised and solid since taking over the starting job in Denver. The Broncos, for all the negative press they have received, are 10-2 SU and have a shot at the No. 1 seed in the AFC. Oakland has also produced a solid season with a 5-7 record, which for the Raiders is practically like making the playoffs. Denver doesn't score a lot of points like in years past, but they do employ an elite defense that has given up the second-fewest points in the AFC. Oakland may be good enough to cover the original spread, but expecting them to stay within a field goal is asking a lot of the sub-.500 group. Prognosis: Denver is a better team with Osweiler behind center. Expect them to grab another win and keep the train rolling.
