2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Push'
New Mexico State was more competitive than last year's 2-10 straight up and 3-9 against the spread record suggests. I know that's a bold statement when you consider that NMSU has been one of the worst teams in the country over the past decade, posting just a 25-98 record. But coach Doug Martin is working his program, and in his third season we'll see if anything has taken root.
The Aggies have 18 returning starters from last year's squad. Last season they played a ton of freshmen and sophomores with the intent of building toward 2016. They have their quarterback, top two rushers, top receiver, and four of five linemen back in the fold. And their offense was actually much better than its 24.5 points per game (No. 92 nationally). They finished in the Top 50 in both rushing and total offense and were No. 54 in passing yards per game.
Defensively, the Aggies were No. 6 in the country against the pass. But that's mainly because they were so easy to run against (No. 125). They are still way, way too small in their front seven. But with 10 starters back we should expect modest improvement.
NMSU has a tough nonconference slate with Florida and Ole Miss on tap. They also have to play on the road against their rival, New Mexico. But the Aggies get the four worst teams on their schedule - UTEP, Georgia State, Troy and Idaho - all in Las Cruces.
I see improvement. But I can't bet that a team that has won four games just one time in seven seasons is going to get to that mark this year. Especially in a loaded (relatively speaking) Sun Belt. I'll take a 'push' on this squad.
