2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
Bob Davie is just 11-26 in his time in Albuquerque. At most programs that would have a coach either on the hot seat or the unemployment line. But the New Mexico faithful are showing a lot of patience and are hoping that this is the year in which Davie's boys break out and make their first bowl game since 2007.
The Lobos have been extremely competitive under Davie, with nine of their last 20 conferences losses coming by a touchdown or less. That includes tight losses t Air Force (by four) and at Utah State (by seven) last season. Those two teams combined for 19 wins. Davie is expecting the team to take the next step and is hoping that having his top three runners back from last year will ignite their option attack.
New Mexico has 14 returning starters back and welcome 13 of their top 18 starters back on defense. That is really the side of the ball that needs work as they allowed 58 or more points to three separate opponents last season and 30 or more points eight times.
The Lobos have a chance to make some hay early in the season. They play two weak teams out of the gate (Miss Valley State and Tulsa) and get both games at home. They also host rival, and fellow weak sister, New Mexico State on Oct. 3. New Mexico's first four Mountain West games are also against five lower-tier squads.
This is a tough season win total number. This one is exactly where it needs to be. But I think New Mexico finds a way to get 'over'. They've won five road games in three years under Davie. If they can get two wins away from ABQ this season then I think the Lobos have enough early winnable home games to get to five victories and pass last season's total.
