The defending Super Bowl champions have been embroiled in controversy this offseason - you may have heard about it - and head into the 2015 season under a veil of uncertainty. Will they have Tom Brady for 16 games? Maybe 12? Maybe 15? And while they wait for a decision in Brady's court trial, the Pats, and their backers, are stuck in limbo.

But the Brady melodrama has masked the fact that the Patriots lost a load of talent this offseason. I feel that they are significantly weaker than they were at this point last year. The secondary has been decimated, and New England has zero depth on both the offensive and defensive line.

The Patriots have overcome a host of issues in the past, and they are seemingly immune to the types of statistical regressions that "normal" teams must endure. But that's mainly because they have Brady and Bill Belichick. But if Brady misses a quarter of the season - and I, personally, do not think that he will miss more than one game - then will this team be able to hold up?

New England's schedule is ruthless . Three of their first five games are away from home against teams that won at least nine games last year. Three of their last four games are away from home, and they have to head to Denver for the annual Brady-Manning showdown.

But the Pats are still in the East. And that means that they are still head and shoulders better than the other third-rate organizations in their group. The Patriots have won at least 10 games for 12 straight years, and they have had exactly one losing season since 1996. Their number is low at 10.5, and anyone betting against this group is mentally unstable. The Patriots will find their way 'over,' and this is an easy wager to make.
