2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
Nevada's 2014 record may look nondescript at 7-6. But a deeper look shows just how close they were to double-digit wins for the second time in five years. The Wolf Pack lost by a touchdown or less to Arizona, Boise State, Colorado State and Air Force - four teams that each won 10 or more games themselves. The Wolf Pack was close, but not close enough, to an epic season.
The Cody Fajardo Era is now over, and the Nevada offense will have to move on without one of the best quarterbacks in the program's last two decades. Fajardo was their leading passer and rusher and was the clear go-to guy. The Wolf Pack do return a lot of skill players. But how they perform will be completely dependent on who ends up under center.
Nevada has only five returning defensive starters, and last year they benefitted from a robust +11 turnover margin, which will be nearly impossible to repeat. They have just three of their top eight tacklers back.
Despite the transition, the Wolf Pack still have a great opportunity to beat their season win total. They should handle their opening FCS opponent. And they should also get wrecked by Arizona and Texas A&M. But then they have five straight games against teams that went a combined 19-42 last year. Nevada does close with three of their last four on the road. But they also have a bye week to prepare for that stretch, and the home game is against an average SJSU team.
Despite a schedule with a lot of potential wins on it, I don't think there is any way that Nevada gets to eight wins. Fajardo was that good. And Nevada's defense could be pretty bad. I think they will go 5-7 and miss a bowl game. So this is an easy 'under' for me.
