2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
Bo Pelini was definitely a weird dude who was never fully embraced in Lincoln. However, all he did was lead the Cornhuskers to seven straight seasons with nine or more wins and exactly four losses. That wasn't good enough. Now Pelini is gone, and Mike Riley managed to fail his way upwards from Oregon State, taking over a stacked Nebraska program.
I really like Riley as a coach. He was a constant overachiever. But it remains to be seen if he can handle a potential powerhouse program like Nebraska.
The Huskers have six starters back on each side of the ball, including quarterback Tommy Armstrong. They do have to replace hero running back Ameer Abdullah and three offensive linemen. But if Nebraska can finally find a way to break back into the top half of the national rankings in several major categories then they should have enough offense to be a player in the Big Ten.
Riley really needs to win the home opener against BYU. If he can do that then a trip to Miami - who isn't very good and is completely rebuilding - is the only thing standing between Riley and a 5-0 start. Nebraska avoids Michigan and Ohio State, and they get both Wisconsin and Michigan State in Lincoln. Even if they dump both of those, the only other really difficult game is a trip to Minnesota on Oct. 17.
I absolutely like Nebraska to get 'over' their total. I do not see this team getting upset twice. And I think they have a great chance to take down Wisconsin to make up for any potential slip-ups. Riley has plenty of talent to work with. And if they can get on a roll early in the season - that BYU game is absolutely critical - then the positive momentum could carry them through league play.
This one is an easy call. Take the 'over'. Even if Riley can't avoid Nebraska's customary four losses then that would still just result in a 'push'. This wager is all upside.
