Ken Niumatalolo continues to do yeoman's work in Annapolis, and Navy remains a solid and viable college football program. But after more than a century as an independent, the Middies have finally joined a conference and they will be fighting for a league title.

Unfortunately, this is one of Niumatalolo's more undermanned squads. He does have one major weapon: quarterback Keenan Reynolds, one of the top signal callers in Navy history. Unfortunately, he is one of just four starters back on that side of the ball. The defense is a little better off, with six returning starters, but they need to improve dramatically on last year's No. 94-ranked rush defense.

Navy is definitely better than the thick group of bottom-tier teams in the American Athletic. And they have a gift schedule from the AAC this year, avoiding the three best teams from the East (Cincinnati, UCF and Temple) and getting East Carolina at home. Their biggest obstacle to reaching eight wins could be a nonconference slate chock full of rivalry games (Air Force and Army as well as Notre Dame).

Navy's new core doesn't have a lot of true experience. But this is still a relatively salty group with 13 senior starters. They should also benefit from a more streamlined focus; instead of playing an independent's schedule with rolling motivation they have the singular focus of trying to win a conference title. I think that will definitely help them in the long run.

This is probably my least favorite Navy team of the last four years. But Reynolds is outstanding, and the seniors should get a jolt from playing in their new conference. With this schedule I'll be surprised if they don't get to eight wins. Play 'over'.
