2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
All-American candidate Dak Prescott is back for the Bulldogs, giving them a chance in one of the deepest and most difficult divisions in college football. But after a breakout 2014 season for Mississippi State - their 10 wins and Orange Bowl berth made school history - I think they simply lost too much talent to be expected to be a major player in the West this year.
Mississippi State has just seven total starters returning, including Prescott. They don't log annual Top-5 recruiting classes like Alabama and LSU, so it is going to take Dan Mullen a season or two to restock the roster.
The best thing that Miss State has going for it is several well-placed gimme games. They open with Southern Miss before taking on LSU in Week 2. After that game they get a veritable bye week against Northwestern State before a tough two-game road trip at Auburn and at Texas A&M. But after that pair of games they have three straight winnable home games against Troy, Louisiana Tech and Kentucky.
Let's assume Miss State sweeps its four gimme games and beats Kentucky in a game the Bulldogs should be favored. That's five wins. But I just don't see them winning two SEC games; the West is that good this year. I think it is going to take a lot of work just to get to six wins and bowl eligibility for the Bulldogs. And even if absolutely everything broke right and Prescott played out of his mind, I think Miss State maxes out at seven wins.
This is one of the easiest calls in the SEC - especially the West. Play Miss State 'under'.
