2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
The Tigers were a money team last year, covering the spread in nine of their 13 games while producing the program's best-ever campaign. Their 10 wins was equal to their win total for the previous four seasons combined and was a school record. But now Memphis enters the season with a big target on its back and is looking to replace a load of talent that moved on from last year.
Memphis walked through the AAC last year, winning its seven league games by an average of 23 points. They leaned on a defense in the Top 20 in both scoring and rush defense. But they lost eight starters from that group, with several players going in the NFL draft, and the offense will be charged with leading the way this year. Quarterback Paxton Lynch leads eight returning starters and a lot of speed from the No. 21 scoring attack last year.
Memphis maxed out last year. And they simply don't have the same level of talent that they were packing last season. The good news is that their schedule may be a bit easier overall. Their only big nonconference game is at home against Ole Miss. And they have two tricky, but winnable, road games at Kansas and at Bowling Green.
That being said, I don't see Memphis getting to nine wins this year. I think they will split their tough early games - at Kansas, at Bowling Green, vs. Cincinnati and vs. Ole Miss. They should be 3-3 heading to Tulsa in a letdown spot on Oct. 23. And from there the schedule is feeble: at Tulsa, Tulane, Navy, at Houston, at Temple, SMU. That's pretty soft. But they would also need to sweep all six games to get over this number. I don't think so. I think they will split their road games at Houston and Temple and come up just under this total with eight wins.
