2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
Last year the two Sun Belt newcomers, Appalachian State and Georgia Southern, stole most of the headlines with their out-of-nowhere big seasons, combining to go 14-2 in league play and with Southern winning the regular-season title. But Lafayette went 7-1 in Sun Belt play and enjoyed the league's tie-in New Orleans Bowl berth for the fourth straight year, winning over Nevada to go 4-0 in the Bayou.
Lafayette has to replace do-it-all quarterback Terrance Broadway. And a lot of this season revolves around how junior Brooks Haack adjusts to the starting spot in this rush-based offense.
The Ragin' Cajun defense was outstanding in the bowl win. But they gave up 30 or more points six times during the regular season. They will need to show improvement despite losing five of their top six tacklers.
Lafayette opens the year in SEC country. And games against mid-majors Akron and Louisiana Tech are not gimme games. They avoid Georgia Southern again but have to play at Appalachian State at the end of three road games in four weeks stretch in November.
I like Louisiana. They have controlled this division the last few years. But there is just too much parity in this league to pinpoint a clear-cut favorite. I think eight wins is ambitious considering that they have a tough non-league slate. I think they are headed for seven wins, and I would play this one 'under'.
