Gonzaga Bulldogs Odds to Win the 2015 NCAA Tournament with Picks and Predictions
by George Monroy - 3/5/2015
The Gonzaga Bulldogs dropped their final game of the season to a BYU squad that might not even qualify for the NCAA tournament in a few weeks. The loss, which came only days before the postseason is set to begin, broke the Bulldogs 21-game winning streak and an even bigger 41-game home winning streak, which was the longest in the nation and lasted just over two years. The BYU upset may not be a larger indicator of something wrong with the squad, but it was still a disappointing way to end the regular season.
Gonzaga, however, might use the upset as a way to refocus and get ready for a long and difficult road to a Final Four appearance and possible national title run. The Bulldogs fell in the AP rankings yet can still grab a No. 1 seed before the March 15 selection committee deadline if they run through the West Coast Conference Tournament while having one of the other top ranked schools falter during their own tournaments. Let's take a closer look at Gonzaga's national title odds with predictions and analysis. All odds come from Sportsbook.ag.
2015 Gonzaga Bulldogs National Title Storylines
Prior to its recent stumble, Gonzaga hadn't lost a game since Dec. 6 against the then-No. 3 Arizona Wildcats in a close, overtime matchup that came down to the final possession-the squad has been that good. A three-point loss during the final game of the season shouldn't be an issue that ruins Gonzaga's national title chances. However, if the team falls out of a No. 1 seed and receives a higher set of odds from the sportsbooks then bettors should count it as a gift.
Gonzaga point guard Kevin Pangos, who is averaging nearly 12 points and five assists per game, was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year, while Gary Bell Jr was named WCC Defensive Player of the Year. However, the best player on the Bulldogs roster may have been Kentucky transfer Kyle Wiltjer, who led the team in scoring with nearly 17 points per game. Overall, the squad has relied on its efficient shooting throughout the year and currently has the best shooting percentage in the nation.
2015 Gonzaga Bulldogs National Title Odds and ATS Trends
Gonzaga is currently receiving the sixth-best national title odds at +1800, according to the oddsmakers at Sportsbook.ag. The loss has already added a bit of value to the Bulldogs title odds as they were only +1200 prior to the BYU matchup last week. Overall, the team is just as good as they were before the defeat and could be an excellent bet based on the updated odds.Gonzaga ended the regular season with a 14-12-2 ATS record but also produced an excellent 9-4 home ATS mark and 14-12 totals record. The squad has been an excellent 3-point shooting team this season and ranked No. 7 in the nation in long-range shooting percentage.
2015 Gonzaga Bulldogs National Title Odds and Predictions
Historically, Gonzaga has always hung around the top of the AP rankings and national title odds. The team has even been considered a threat to win a national title at certain points over the last 20 years, yet for all the Cinderella runs the Bulldogs seem to have, they still do not own a single Final Four appearance. Gonzaga is an excellent mid-major conference school but may be overhyped on a yearly basis, at least where a national title is concerned.
The Bulldogs are a fun team that probably has very little chance at winning a national title. If you believed in the school last week, then by all means jump on the opportunity to get even better odds. However, teams like Gonzaga just do not win national titles. Expect a decent postseason run from the team, even though a Final Four appearance is unlikely.
