2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
The Eagles had an amazing season in 2014, their first in FBS action and their first run through the Sun Belt. They were a perfect 8-0 in league play (Ohio State and Florida State were the only other two teams to run the table in their respective conferences) and came incredibly close to knocking off both North Carolina State and Top 10 Georgia Tech. Southern was one of the biggest mid-major surprises in the country and will have a target on their backs today.
Georgia Southern runs an option attack, averaging just 13 passes per game but scoring an outstanding 39.1 points per game. Quarterback Kevin Ellison and their three other leading rushers all return after combining for 43 rushing touchdowns last year. However, the Eagles have four new offensive linemen, and that could hamper their attack.
Defensively, GSU welcomes back eight returning starters and are sound on that side. They did benefit from a significant turnover differential last year (+8), and that can usually signal a regression the next year.
The nonconference schedule is challenging again with trips at to Morgantown and Athens. They also have a challenging game against Western Michigan in the home opener and two back-to-back road trips on the slate. Finally, they have to play a key league game on the road at Appalachian State.
Georgia Southern stepped up in their biggest games last year. But they also had one of the easiest schedules in the country last year and took advantage. Southern is still a solid squad but won't reach nine wins again this year. However, I do think they can (and will) lose their four toughest games and still beat their win total. I would call for GSU to go 8-4 and go 'over'.
