Each year before the beginning of the college football season many sportsbooks release lines for the major "Games of the Year". Sports fans love to devour any information they can get during a slow betting season before college football starts. Many of the games are still weeks away, and the lines could change if certain teams get hot and others fail to meet expectations. However, let's take a closer look at a few of the biggest games of the upcoming season and go over a few stats and expectations for the teams. All lines come from BookMaker.
Sept 12: LSU -1.5 @ Mississippi State: life in the SEC is always difficult, as evidenced by the fact that two major players will face off during the first game of the year -- one could possibly be eliminated from contention one day into the season. LSU has won two of the last three matchups but dropped last season's game as a seven-point favorite. Les Miles and company struggled last season and don't have a major quarterback prospect on the roster, so another tough year could be in store.
Sept 18: Florida State -13.5 @ Boston College: most football experts believe Florida State is still a very good team after the departure of Jameis Winston for the NFL, but questions remain as to whether or not they are national title contender. The Seminoles have a roster filled with talent, and their first major test will be a road matchup against a very good Boston College squad.
Oct 3: Alabama -3.5 @ Georgia: Alabama's first major road test of the season will come during its fifth game of the year against another SEC and national title contender in Georgia. There isn't much recent history to look at between the two schools since the last time they played was in 2012. Last season the Crimson Tide struggled on the road, posting a 1-3 ATS mark. Georgia, on the other hand, wasn't great at home, either, and produced a 5-4 ATS record in 2014.
Oct 17: Notre Dame -1 vs USC: the Trojans have their work cut out for them if they plan on being in national title contention in 2015, and this game could go a long way in deciding their fate. Notre Dame, on the other, has an easier road to contention, and a few experts already believe an undefeated season could be in store. The Fighting Irish no longer player in a major conference and they need to win their marquee matchups to get any attention from the playoff committee. USC has won two of the last three meetings.
November 27: TCU -4 vs Baylor : Chances are this game will decide the Big 12 Championship and possibly lead to a playoff berth for one of the teams. The Big 12 believes it got the short end of the stick during last season's playoff rankings, and if either one of these schools can end the year undefeated or with a single loss they would yet again have a strong postseason case. TCU is currently 3-0 ATS over the last three seasons in this series, but was an underdog in every matchup.
November 28: Alabama -2.5 @ Auburn: the Iron Bowl is typically a huge game for both teams even if one of the squads is not in contention. Two seasons ago Auburn ruined Alabama's chance at winning a fourth title in five years and the possibility of cementing itself as one of the greatest teams in college football history. The Crimson Tide have won and covered three of the last four meetings between the teams with 20-point-plus blowouts in each.
