2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
Over the past half-decade the Tigers have really gone a long way to shedding the "perpetual underachievers" label that seemed to tail them for the previous two decades. (I'd say North Carolina has slid into that role in the ACC now.) Clemson has gone 42-11 the past four seasons, have won three straight bowl games, and have been in the Top 10 in two of the last three years. They are a model program in the watered-down ACC.
But I am not high on the Tigers heading into 2015, and I think they could see their streak of double-digit wins snapped. Yes, sensational sophomore Deshaun Watson is back under center after an injury-shortened freshman season. But Clemson is weak along the offensive line, and their defense, which was Top 5 nationally in all major categories, has been gutted by graduation and defection.
Clemson lost to any good team that it played last year. (The exception was their blowout bowl win over mediocre Oklahoma). They don't have a lot of talented teams on their schedule this year either. After all, it's the ACC. So much like a team like Duke, I think that Clemson will be significantly weaker this year without having a big impact on its record.
Clemson gets its three toughest opponents, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech and Florida State, at home. They do have to play four of their last on the road (after figuring opening with five of six at home). But I have a hard time predicting more than two losses in the back half of their schedule.
The Tigers have won 10 or more games for four straight years. And while their season win total number is a red flag because it is so low, I still think the rebuilding Tigers can clear this bar. I see nine wins, and Clemson will just sneak 'over'.
