2015 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Push'
I expected a much bigger hangover for the Golden Knights last year after their dream 2013 run (12-1 with an upset BCS Bowl win). However, UCF overcame the loss of Blake Bortles and shook off a brutal last-second loss in Ireland in the opener against Penn State to tally nine wins and post another solid year.
Central Florida heads into 2015 with a solid starting quarterback, as opposed to last year's uncertainty. And William Stanback is a clear bell cow running back behind a solid offensive line. But UCF lost its top four receivers and was just No. 103 in rushing last year. So there aren't a lot of answers on this side of the ball.
Heading into last season the Knights returned 10 starters from a Top 20 defense. This year that number dwindles to four starters back from last year's Top 5 group. They have a new coordinator, they lost their top five tacklers from last year, and they don't have a single returning starter in the secondary. This group is clearly a work in progress.
This season win total number seems awfully low for a program that's won 31 games the last three years and topped nine wins four times in the past five seasons. However, this is very clearly a rebuilding season for the Knights. Last year they were able to survive Bortles' departure on the strength of an extremely talented and experienced defense.
The AAC is going through a complete renovation, and UCF has one of the strongest programs of the bunch. They won't completely collapse, but I am expecting them to be significantly worse. That said, I have a hard time predicting doormats like Connecticut, Tulane and Tulsa upsetting this team. I think there are enough winnable games here for the Knights to get to seven wins. I'll call for a 'push'.
