Case of the Mondays: No Super Bowl Suspensions, but More NFL Trouble
by Ricky Dimon - 1/26/2015
There have not been and almost certainly won't be any Super Bowl suspensions levied down on the Patriots for deflate-gate. But that does not mean the air
was taken out of suspension talk over the weekend. Leave it to Josh Gordon to put himself at risk of missing next season. Speaking of missed seasons, Kobe
Bryant is once again done for the year on the hardwood, and the Buffalo Sabres have apparently forgotten that there is still hockey to be played in 2015.

Josh Gordon . According to a report by Pro Football Talk (is this Mike Florio's first report in history that did not come at the end of a Sunday night football game?), Gordon recently tested positive for alcohol and likely faces a one-year ban by the NFL. The Browns' wide receiver had already been suspended for the first 10 games of this season as a result of violating the league's substance-abuse policy. He also missed the finale for breaking undisclosed team rules. Gordon was and is subject to alcohol testing due to his DWI arrest in July of 2014. As for the last game of the 2014-15 campaign, New England is a -1.5 favorite over Seattle in Super Bowl XLIX.
Kobe Bryant
. Last year it was a ruptured Achilles' that felled Kobe; now it is a torn rotator cuff. The 36-year-old, who was limited to a mere six games of the
2013-14 campaign, suffered this latest injury in his 35th game of this season. His right rotator cuff gave out during last Wednesday's loss to
New Orleans, and he is expected to be out for the duration of the Lakers' 82-contest slate. Kobe has one year ($25 million) left on his contract that he
signed with L.A. in the fall of 2013. As for the team, it has lost eight in a row and is 12-33. Its Staples Center mates, the Clippers, are -13 home favorites over Denver on Monday.
Buffalo Sabres
. The NHL all-star break could not have come at better time for the Sabres. Then again, they are so bad that perhaps not even an eight-day layoff can get
them on track. Buffalo has lost a ridiculous 11 games in a row and 15 of its last 16. It has won only one game since Dec. 15. But there's more: not a
single tilt in the current 11-game slide has progressed to overtime, and only two of the team's 11 setbacks have come by a one-goal margin. The Sabres are
not just losing-they are getting clobbered. They are 30th out of 30 teams in the standings, 30th in goals-per-game, 30th
in goals-against, 30th in power-play percentage, and 30th in penalty-kill percentage. Chicago is a +400 favorite to win the Stanley
Cup.
Georgia Tech
. The Yellow Jackets scored a grand total of 28 points in last Thursday's loss to Virginia for their worst output ever in an ACC game (with a comfortable
eight points to spare). Their 12 points in the second 20 minutes also constituted their lowest output in team history in one half of an ACC contest. Just
when you thought it could not get any worse than a 57-28 setback…well, it didn't. But it continued to be bad for Georgia Tech, which was 0-6 in conference
action heading into a winless clash against 0-5 Boston College on Sunday. Despite having home-court advantage, Tech went down to the lowly Eagles 64-62.
Kentucky is a -125 favorite to win the National Championship.
Premier League
. The fourth round of the FA Cup last Saturday was an unmitigated disaster for the Premier League. Four EPL representatives suffered home defeats to get
bounced out of the tournament. Arguably the league's two best teams were among the quartet of failures. Chelsea, which is atop the Premier League table,
led Bradford City 2-0 at Stamford Bridge before melting down and losing 4-2. Manchester City, second in the standings behind the Blues, succumbed 2-0 to
Middlesbrough at Etihad Stadium. Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur faced matches against fellow EPL sides and were stunned by underdog opponents (Crystal
Palace and Leicester City, respectively). Chelsea is a -114 favorite over Man City on Saturday.
Roger Federer
. Seven of the top eight seeds in the men's singles draw at the Australian Open took care of business to reach the quarterfinals. The only one who didn't?
None other than Federer. Previously 10-0 lifetime against Andreas Seppi and 21-1 in total sets in the head-to-head series, Federer was stunned by the
Italian 6-4, 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(5) during third-round action last Friday. The 33-year-old Swiss has now contested 10 consecutive hard-court majors (Aussie
Open and U.S. Open) without reaching the final, a drought that began after he last triumphed Down Under in 2010. Novak Djokovic is a -140 favorite to win
the title.
Tiger Woods
. According to some reports, attending a World Cup skiing event can be dangerous. According to other reports, it can be the source of a cover-up story.
Lindsey Vonn, Tiger's girlfriend, recounted that a photographer knocked him in the mouth with a camera. Race officials, on the other hand, claimed there
was no such incident. Whatever the case, Tiger-as photographic evidence confirms-was somehow without one of his teeth last week in Italy. At least Vonn
won…and looked good doing it. So it's not exactly all bad for Tiger. As for the slumping former world No. 1's on-course exploits, he is scheduled to return
this week at the raucous Waste Management Phoenix Open. Tiger is +1800 to win it; Jordan Spieth and Bubba Watson are +1400 co-favorites.
