Case of the Mondays: Durant Goes Off Then is Off During All-Star Game
by Ricky Dimon - 2/16/2015
Kevin Durant sounded off at the media during All-Star Weekend, and his shot was just as off in Sunday night's game at Madison Square Garden. On the ice,
Dallas Stars' forward Tyler Seguin will have some time off over the next few weeks, while Jim Furyk's golf game was off on Sunday, and it cost him a
final-round lead at Pebble Beach.

Kevin Durant
. "I just learn how to deal with y'all," is what Durant told reporters last Saturday as part of his response to being asked about the job security-or lack
thereof-of Oklahoma City head coach Scott Brooks. Durant also said, "You guys really don't know shit," which suggests he has not yet learned how to deal
with them since that is probably not that way he wants to go about doing it on a consistent basis. One day later, the Thunder's superstar forward went
1-for-6 (all from three-point range) with three points in a Western Conference-low 10 minutes of playing time in his team's 163-158 All-Star Game victory.
OKC teammate Russell Westbrook, on the other hand, garnered MVP honors with 41 points on 16-of-28 shooting. One can only assume that will inspire Westbrook
to take even more shots during Thunder games than he does already. Durant is +2500 to win NBA MVP; Westbrook is +2000.
Tyler Seguin
. Dallas has a fault in one of its Stars, although it is no fault of his own. The team is crying foul over a hit by Florida's Dmitry Kulikov last Friday
that will probably sideline Seguin for three to six weeks. Kulikov undercut his opponent after Seguin made a pass and was skating into the offensive zone.
He suffered the NHL trademarked "lower body injury," which Stars' head coach Lindy Ruff has indicated is a knee issue. Ruff added that the incident was "a
play that I don't like; it's dirty, low play…. The league doesn't like it and I want to see the league deal with it." Seguin is tied for third in the NHL
in points (59) and tied for fifth in goals (29). Dallas is +5000 to win the Western Conference.
Chris Johnson
. The New York Jets declined their team option on the veteran running back, opting not to exercise a $500,000 bonus on Saturday. That makes Johnson a free
agent for a second consecutive offseason, which really isn't terrible news for him-especially not when the Jets are the team that lets you go. The
29-year-old slumped to career-low totals in rushing yards (663), carries (155), and receptions (24) in 2014. Johnson is one of just seven players in NFL
history to run for 2,000 yards in a season (2,006 with Tennessee in 2009). The Jets are +5000 to win the AFC.
South Carolina
. It was not a good week for South Carolina basketball, men's or women's. Both teams faced daunting tasks-and failed them miserably. The Gamecock women,
ranked No. 1 in the nation, got blown out by Connecticut 87-62 last Monday. The men had to play the top team in the land, Kentucky, and to say it did not
go well would be an understatement. Undefeated UK has endured its fair share of close games this season, but it destroyed the visiting Cocks 77-43 on
Saturday. South Carolina shot 23.6 percent from the floor (13 of 55) and went 3-for-20 from beyond the arc. The Wildcats are -125 to win it all and +220 to
go undefeated.
Atletico Madrid
. One week after hammering Real Madrid 4-0, Atletico came crashing back to Earth on Sunday when it lost 2-0 at Celtic Vigo. The club had pulled within four
points of La Liga leader Real and within three of second-place Barcelona, but it is now seven points back because the league's two powerhouses both won
last weekend. Atletico did not come close to doing so against Celtic Vigo, which led by two at halftime and coasted the rest of the way. Celtic is ninth on
the table with just 29 points, so it's safe to say this is a borderline disastrous result for Atletico. Real is a -120 favorite at Bovada Sportsbook to win La Liga.
Josh Donaldson
. This is the time of year for dreaded arbitration hearings, and the Blue Jays' third baseman lost his last Friday. Granted, you could be doing way worse
than making $4.3 million in 2015. Still, Donaldson had been seeking $5.75 million from Toronto. The 29-year-old hit .255 with 29 home runs and 98 RBIs last
season with Oakland before being dealt to the Jays in December. In his first full big-league year in 2013, Donaldson batted .301 with 24 homers and 93
RBIs. He has also averaged 91 runs scored over the past two campaigns. Donaldson is +4000 to lead the majors in home runs.
Jim Furyk
. Furyk was the 54-hole leader (by one shot) at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, but he never showed any signs of being able to maintain it on
Sunday. The veteran with the funky swing did not make a single birdie in his first 10 holes on a course that was there for the taking (for example, two men
fired final-round 65s, Dustin Johnson carded a 66, and Brandt Snedeker's 67 propelled him to a three-shot victory). Furyk missed three birdie attempts from
inside 10 feet on the front nine as he stumbled to a closing 74. As for Snedeker, his 22-under 265 broke-by two strokes-his own Pebble Beach record that he
had set in 2013. Furyk is +4400 to win the FedEx Cup; Rory McIlroy is a +400 favorite.
