2015 Carolina Panthers Predictions: Season Win Totals Odds and Picks

2015 Las Vegas Season Win Total: 8.5

Carolina became the first team in NFC South history to win back-to-back division titles last year. So that was positive. But when you consider the fact that they earned a playoff spot despite winning just seven games, you get an idea of just how pathetic this division was last year. The Panthers didn't improve their station this offseason, however, suffering one of the most crippling injuries of the preseason so far in 2015. And that has them behind the eight-ball heading into the regular season.

Kelvin Benjamin blew out his knee and is out for the season. Benjamin was brilliant at times last year and was truly the only game-breaking weapon in the Carolina passing game. Now quarterback Cam Newton and tight end Greg Olsen are the only positives on one of the worst collections of skill players in the NFL. Benjamin's loss simply can't be overstated.

Defensively the Panthers will still be pretty good. They are one of the last teams to run an effective Cover-2 scheme, as increased accuracy in the short-passing game league-wide has rendered that defensive approach almost obsolete. Carolina has one of the best linebacking corps in football, and they should again field a unit among the Top 10 or 12 in the league. (And they better, because their offense is going to be pretty disgusting.)

Every year nearly half of the teams that make the playoffs one season fail to make it the next. I think Carolina is a prime candidate to miss out on the postseason in 2015. They were the best of a horrific lot in the South last year. But New Orleans and Atlanta should be better, and Carolina's schedule, while easier than last season's brutal gauntlet, is still pretty rugged in Weeks 6 through 16.

With Benjamin this team likely would've threatened .500 again this season; their system is just that solid. But without the key to their passing game I think they'll have too much pressure on the quarterback and defense. I would definitely play this number 'under'.
