2015 Season Win Total Prediction: 'Under'
I correctly predicted that BYU would stay 'under' their season win total last year, winning just eight games against an 8.5 total. They were impressively streaky last season, sandwiching a four-game losing streak between a pair of four-game winning streaks that included upset wins at Texas and Cal. The season ended with an OT bowl loss against upstart Memphis.
BYU lost considerable talent and experience, especially on defense, and this year's schedule could make matching last year's mark a tall task.
BYU's offense is hoping that quarterback Taysom Hill and running back Jamaal Williams can both fully recover from last year's season-ending leg injuries. Hill's recovery is reportedly going well, but reports on Williams are sketchy. BYU has a potentially exceptional line and plenty of receiving talent back from the No. 14 scoring offense in the country last year.
The defense is a mess. BYU has just two senior starters and only one guy with starting experience in the back eight of their 3-4 base. They were No. 112 against the pass last year and allowed an average of 27.5 points per game. They'll be hard-pressed to top either number.
Complicating things further is the fact that BYU's schedule is unrelenting. Their opening month features road trips to Nebraska, UCLA and Michigan, as well as a date with a Top 15 Boise State squad. A 0-4 start is not only possible but probable. They should rebound during a four-game homestand. But late-season trips to Missouri and Utah State are formidable.
I think that BYU will find a way to match last year's eight wins. That's no small feat given their personnel questions and schedule. But not enough to get 'over' their season win total.
