Betting Odds and Tuesday's Picks of the Day from the Odds Shopper
by Dave Schwab - 3/2/2015
Any expert handicapper with tell you that tracking line movement and shopping the odds is just as important as breaking down the matchup when it comes to picking winners. A half point here or there can oftentimes mean the difference between cashing in or paying out when it comes to wagering on the games.
The following is a brief look at a couple of top plays for this Tuesday's games where I shopped the odds to try and get the best value for my picks.
NBA- Utah Jazz at Memphis Grizzlies
The Jazz are just 23-35 straight up on the year, but they have now strung together six wins in their last eight games while going 6-1-1 against the spread. This past Saturday they beat Milwaukee, 82-75, while covering as 3.5-point favorites at home. Utah will now go on the road for Tuesday's matchup where it has gone 10-19 SU but a profitable 17-11-1 ATS.
Memphis continues to battle for the top spot in the Western Conference with a SU record of 42-16 that is 4.5 games in back of Golden State. The Grizzlies got past Minnesota this past Saturday 101-97, but they could not cover as 5.5-point favorites on the road. They are now 3-3 SU in their last six games while going a costly 2-4 ATS. Memphis has been one of the best teams in the league at home this season with a SU record of 23-6, but ATS this record drops to just 14-13-2.
This is a great spot for Utah to catch the Grizzlies possibly looking past this game to Wednesday's showdown on the road against Houston, which is currently in third place in the West. I do not see the Jazz getting the SU win on the road, but they will cover with the points.
Memphis opened as an 8.5-point home favorite, and that is the current line with Sportsbook.ag, BetOnline and Top Bet.
NCAAB- Villanova Wildcats vs. Creighton Bluejays
The Villanova Wildcats have already clinched the Big East regular-season title, but they are still gunning for a top spot as possibly a No. 2 or even a No. 1 seed for this year's NCAA Tournament. They come into Tuesday's conference tilt riding a 10-game winning streak both SU and ATS. The Wildcats have posted double-digit victories in their last four outings, and they have covered in seven of their previous 10 road games this season.
It has been a rough ride for the Bluejays this season with an overall record of 13-16 while going 13-15-1 ATS. They have failed to cover in eight of 15 home games this season, and they are 6-6-1 ATS as underdogs. This past Saturday, they lost to Seton Hall 67-66 on the road in a game that ended as a "push". Earlier this season, Creighton was hammered by the Wildcats 71-50 as a 15-point underdog on the road.
The Bluejays have actually covered in four of their last six games, but you have to ride the hottest hand in this contest with a play on Villanova.
The Wildcats opened as 8.5-point road favorites in this matchup, and the line quickly moved to 9.5 points with Top Bet and it jumped up to 10.5 points with BetOnline.
Prop Bet Odds of the Week- Hosting the 88th Academy Awards
The recent Academy Awards show suffered a fairly significant decline in its TV viewing audience, and while some broadcasting experts blamed the lack of a blockbuster movie as the cause, quite of few people pointed the finger at the show's host, Neil Patrick Harris.
Bovada is already looking ahead to next year's show with prop bet odds on who will be picked to host the 88th Academy Awards. It is highly doubtful that Harris will get a chance to redeem himself with the longest odds on the board at 33/1. The name at the top of the list is Jimmy Fallon at 5/2 betting odds, followed by Ellen DeGeneres at 4/1.
Some of the value picks on the board have Stephen Colbert listed at 12/1 with Kevin Spacey and Seth Meyers at 16/1 odds. Why not go with a real "blast from the past" with a play on Billy Crystal at 20/1. If you want to think outside the box, then I would take a hard look at a small play on Kevin Hart at 30/1 odds. He seems to be everywhere these days.
