The new MLB season enters its second week of play this week, and in conjunction with Monday night's matchups Bovada has released a number of player props to add even more action to the games. I have gone through all of these player props to come up with my top three plays of the night.
Los Angeles Angels Starter Matt Shoemaker's Total Strikeouts
The player prop odds for Shoemaker's total strikeouts in Monday night's start against Texas have been set at -115 for both "over" and "under" 5.5. The right-hander went six full innings in his first start of the season, with the Angels coming away with a 5-3 victory against Seattle on the road. He went on to strike out five batters in the winning effort. In 22 previous career starts, he has pitched a total of 147 innings while posting 134 strikeouts for an average of .91 K's an inning.
The Rangers have struck out 50 times in their first seven outings, which averages out to 7.14 a game. They are ranked second to last in the American League is slugging percentage (.299), and their team batting average (.197) is 13th in the AL. I liked the way Shoemaker looked in his first start, and he keeps things going with the over 5.5 strikeouts on Monday night.
Oakland's Brett Lawrie Gets a Hit
This player prop has set the moneyline odds at -175 that Oakland's Brett Lawrie gets a hit in Monday night's road game against Houston. The betting odds that he does not get a hit have been set at +145. The A's third baseman has made 28 appearances at the plate in his first seven games, and he has eight hits. His last time out against Seattle this past Sunday he posted two hits in five at-bats, and just twice this season has he failed to record a hit in a game.
Lawrie will be facing Houston starter Scott Feldman in Monday night's series opener. The right-hander lost a tough 2-0 decision in his first start against Cleveland last Wednesday. He went 6 2/3's innings and gave up just one earned run on five hits. The Astros' pitching staff as a whole has allowed 45 hits in its first six games, and it is ranked second in the AL with an ERA of 2.17. Lawrie has had a hot bat so far this year, but I am going with the extra value in the moneyline that he gets shut down without a hit in this matchup.
San Diego Matt Kemp's Total Hits, Runs and RBI
The betting odds for this prop have been set at +130 for over 2.5 (combined hits, runs and RBI) and at -160 for under. Kemp is off to a solid start this season with 11 hits in 30 at bats. He has scored four runs and knocked in four runs in his first seven games, so this could be a golden opportunity to take advantage of the favorable moneyline on the "over" for this prop.
Kemp will be facing Arizona starter Rubby De La Rosa in Monday night series opener at home. De La Rosa won his first start behind some solid run support the Diamondbacks' 7-6 victory against San Francisco last Tuesday, but the right-hander was still tagged for six earned runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. Considering both players' early form, it adds even more value to the play on the over 2.5 (hits, runs and RBI) for Kemp.
