I definitely like Auburn's chances of emerging as a Top 10 team this year. Even in the stacked SEC West. However, while I like the potential with this group I do think that they are a bit overrated heading into the season. Auburn does have the easiest schedule of any team in the division. But just because they have the easiest dance card doesn't mean that they are one of the best teams, making their preseason Top 10 ranking (based on several national magazines) way premature.

Auburn has just four starters back on offense and are breaking in a new quarterback and two new running backs. They do have eight starters back on defense. But it was a defense that didn't finish in the Top 60 nationally in any major statistical category.

The Tigers should handle Louisville in the season opener at Atlanta. (Auburn is a 12.5-point favorite.) If so then a trip to LSU on Sept. 19 is the only thing standing between them and a 5-0 start since four of Auburn's first five are either at home or on a neutral field.

Auburn also closes the season with four of their last five games at home, including a gimme win over Idaho the week before they face Alabama in the Iron Bowl. Auburn crosses over with Kentucky and rebuilding Georgia from the East.

Again, I'm a big fan of Gus Malzahn. And I like Auburn. But they are overrated. I get it - they made the national title game in 2013 and won it all in 2010. But other than that the Tigers have lost at least five games in five of the last seven seasons. They have a lot of talent. But everyone in the West has a stocked cupboard.

I have Auburn losing at LSU and at Arkansas. They will also lose to either Ole Miss or at A&M. That means they would have to sweep their season-ending homestand against Georgia, Idaho and Alabama. I think the odds are greater that they don't do that than that they do. So I'll take Auburn to go 'under'.
