Sports betting continues to grow in popularity each and every year, but only a small percentage of general betting public actually earns a positive long-term return on their investment. Betting odds by nature are designed to favor the sportsbook, so you have to always be on the lookout for opportunities where you can uncover an edge that tips the scales in your favor. Beating the books on a consistent basis is a tall task that takes the discipline to pick and choose your spots along the way.
Doc's Sports Service has been a leader in the sports selection industry for the past 44 years for the ability to uncover the top betting opportunities out there every week of the year. Turning to a few of the upcoming betting events on the board right now, the following is a brief look at this week's top insider betting tips that can help fatten your bankroll with a few timely plays.
A Chance to Go With the Buckeyes
Reigning college football champion Ohio State is in prime position for another run at a national title this season at 9-0 straight up on the year, but when it comes to betting on the Buckeyes it has been a costly proposition with a 3-6 record against the spread. This Saturday's game against the Illinois Fighting Illini as a 16-point road favorite on BetOnline's current board might present a golden opportunity to go with Ohio State this time around.
The Buckeyes have won nine straight road games against Illinois, and it's highly unlikely that their current SU overall winning streak of 22 straight games dating back to early last season is going to come to an end at Memorial Stadium this Saturday afternoon. They also have a strong history against the spread in this series.
While Ohio State has not been all that great of a team to go with this season, it does come into this game with a 5-2 record ATS in its last seven games against the Fighting Illini. Last season, the Buckeyes cruised to a 55-14 victory at home to cover as 28-point home favorites, and in their last trip to Illinois in 2013 they rolled up 60 points against the Fighting Illini in a 25-point win.
The Heisman Race Tightens Up
LSU running back Leonard Fournette was the clear frontrunner for this season's Heisman Trophy as the best college football player in the nation. However, following a sub-par performance in last Saturday's 30-16 loss to Alabama where he was held to just 31 rushing yards, this race as suddenly tightened. Even if Fournette goes on to tear things up over the Tigers' final three games (Arkansas, Ole Miss and Texas A&M), the damage could be done in the voter's eyes.
Ironically enough, Fournette is now a +200 second-favorite to win this year's Heisman Trophy, with Alabama running back Derrick Henry taking his place as a +150 favorite to win on Bovada's adjusted betting odds. Henry posted one of his best performances of the year in the Tide's dominating victory against LSU with 210 rushing yards and three scores on the ground. Alabama still has Mississippi State, Charleston Southern and Auburn left on its schedule, which should set the stage to draw even more voters onto Henry's Heisman bandwagon.
Finding Value in the Vikings
Do not look now, but the Minnesota Vikings are tied with Green Bay for first place in the NFC North at 6-2 straight up through the first half of the regular season. The Packers are still prohibitive -500 favorites to win the division on BetOnline's NFL updated futures board, but the Vikings might be worth a second look at +325 betting odds. These two division foes have yet to face one another this season, so Minnesota actually controls its own destiny in this title race. The first meeting is on Sunday, Nov. 22 at home, and these two bitter rivals will wrap up the season series in Week 17 at Green Bay.
Even if you do not take a flyer on Minnesota defying the odds by winning the division, it remains a highly-profitable team to bet on. After failing to cover in an opening-week loss to San Francisco, the Vikings have now covered against the spread in their last seven games. They are a perfect 4-0 ATS at home and have covered in both games in which they closed as underdogs. Minnesota has also provided a solid return on a total line bet with six of their first eight games staying "under" the closing line.
Betting on an A-10 Wildcat
As of Wednesday, the betting odds for the first wave of college basketball games this weekend were still "off the board" at BetOnline, but one team you might want to take a closer look at in its season opener once they are released is the Atlantic 10's Davidson Wildcats. Not only were they the top team in their conference last season at 24-8 SU, but they were the top team in the nation ATS at 23-7.
While their season ended on a sour note with a lopsided 83-52 loss to Iowa as 2.5-point underdogs in their first game of the 2015 NCAA Tournament, these Wildcats made quite a bit of money for bettors all season long.
Davidson will open its 2015-16 campaign this Saturday at home against the AAC's Central Florida Knights. It went 12-1 ATS last season at home and is an expected favorite in this matchup. The Wildcats were 16-4 ATS in 20 games last season when closing as favorites.
