This is the time of the year when there is so much going on in the sports betting world that it is easy to miss a couple of golden opportunities to fatten your current betting bankroll. It is all about gaining an inside edge when it comes to consistently beating the books, but you have to be willing to do your homework to uncover these hidden gems.
Over the past four and a half decades dating all the way back to the 1970s, Doc's Sports has been helping serious sports bettors find that inside edge with some of its top unit plays for all the major sports. Their Unit Betting System has proven to be an excellent money management tool that jumps all over the "inside edge" when it is there. The following are a few of this week's expert betting tips that feature a potential edge that should hopefully tip the scales in your favor for a big play in these upcoming sporting events.
Gonzaga Continues to Deliver on the Total Line
The new college basketball season is a little more than a month old, but the 7-3 Gonzaga Bulldogs, out of the West Coast Conference, have already been delivering some big profits. It has not come against the spread with a costly 2-5-1 record in eight games with a posted betting line, but bettors wagering on the "under" in the Bulldogs first eight games with a posted total line have cashed in on seven of those bets.
With senior center Przemek Karnowski out of the lineup, Gonzaga is just 3-2 SU in its last five games, but it continues to play tough on defense with a points-allowed average of 61.1 that is ranked 20th in the nation. Next up on the schedule is Saturday's home game against Tennessee followed by next Monday's matchup on the road against Pepperdine in the Bulldog's WCC season opener.
Betting on Bowl Game Scoring Props
Leave it to Bovada to come up with a pair of very interesting scoring props in advance of the start of the college football bowl season this upcoming Saturday and continuing all the way to the CFP Championship Game on Jan. 11.
The first prop is "will any team score six of fewer points in a bowl game", with the moneyline odds for "yes" set at -200 and "no" at +150.
The second prop is "will any team score 64 points or more in a bowl game", with the moneyline odds set at -120 for either yes or no.
There are 41 games on the upcoming schedule featuring quite a few matchups between teams that have never played one another before. While some of the games are in exotic and warm locations such as the Bahamas and Hawaii, many of the games are scattered all over the country where severe weather could easily be a factor in late-December and early January.
The shear diversity in the matchups along with the high volume of games would push me in the direction of going with "yes" in the first prop that at least one team will fail to score more than six points.
As far as the other team prop, I could see a team going crazy and putting up 64 points or more given some of the porous defenses in the watered-down 80-team field, but at -120 odds I am not willing to bet on it.
Betting on Big NFL Spreads in Week 15
This is the time of the year in the NFL when there are basically two types of teams. The first are the ones bound for the playoffs or trying to still earn a spot in the field. The other are the ones riding out the string following another disappointing campaign.
Heading into Week 15's NFL schedule, a quick glance at 5Dimes' betting lines for the games offers two matchups between teams on each side of the equation that have resulted in a pair of huge pointspreads. In the first game, the 11-2 New England Patriots have been listed as 15.5-point home favorites against 3-10 Tennessee. The other matchup pits the 3-10 Cleveland Browns on the road as 16-point underdogs against the surging 8-5 Seattle Seahawks, who have won their last four games both SU and ATS.
The sportsbooks know that the betting public loves wagering on favorites. However, when does a spread get to be too high to take the risk? According to NFL betting trends by Odds Shark, there were 22 games in 2014 when one team was favored by 10 points or more, and while 21 of them won SU, their record ATS was just 9-11-2. Looking at the results this season, there have been 12 games with a double-digit spread, and the favorite went 10-2 SU with a 5-7 record ATS.
Both the Patriots and the Seahawks are on a roll right now and still fighting for better position in the postseason, but you might want to think twice about laying all the points to go along for the ride.
